July Museletter
Liberty

In my mind I automatically go back to grade school and some of the first statements on what Liberty is. As an adult, I have read opinion articles about liberty being "just" a word, or one that is often chosen to be replaced by other words like equality , or used as an explanation of political viewpoints.

The torch is a symbol of enlightenment. The  Statue of Liberty's torch lights the way to freedom showing us the path to  Liberty . Even the  Statue's  official name represents her most important symbol " Liberty  Enlightening the World "

What does liberty mean to you?

Where do you find it? How do you sustain it? How does it feel, look, smell, taste, or sound?

By now you may have experienced liberty in a number of ways; even the fact that you are reading this shows you've flexed your liberty muscle and decided to delve into this musing. So as we reflect on our ability to act as we please, what is pleasing to us in the way that we act? Are we being true to ourselves? What would you keep doing or not doing...and what might you change?

More than likely your view of liberty is shaped by your beliefs, roles, experiences, and what's important to you. Also likely your understanding of liberty has shifted from your adolescent to teen years, into adulthood and throughout our legacy years.

Nonetheless, the question is posed...what is this virtue, this 'liberty' as we call it?

As we decide for ourselves how to flex our liberty muscle, here is an article from Yoga International with a view on the parallels between Yoga Sutras and the 4th of July.

Thursday, July 11 at 6:30 pm .
Free for members. Donation for non-members (see below)

While the benefits of cardiovascular exercise have been widely researched and promoted, the benefits of slow, meditative yoga are not as well studied or understood. In this class Kristine Kaoverii Weber, yoga therapist and founder of Subtle® Yoga, will discuss recent scientific findings that suggest important neurobiologic benefits of regularly practicing slow, mindful movement that differ from those of hard exercise. These benefits include reducing inflammation, promoting nervous system resilience, and encouraging neuroplasticity. The practice style can be tailored to support different body types/physical abilities and those with chronic health challenges. *This will be a lecture that focuses on the science of how yoga benefits different body types and addresses chronic pain; some sitting poses will also be demonstrated.

Kristine Kaoverii Weber, MA, c-IAYT, eRYT500 has been studying yoga and holistic healing for 30 years, teaching since 1995, and training yoga teachers since 2003. She is the director of the Subtle® Yoga Teacher Training for Behavioral Health Professionals program at MAHEC in Asheville, NC, and presents workshops and trainings internationally. Find out more at www.subtleyoga.com.

The class is free for Integrative Life Members. There is a suggested donation of $5 for non-members. Donations will go to our monthly non-profit beneficiary.

*Please note that the event will be held in the Glen Rock Community Room at 372 Depot Street, Asheville, NC 28801. This is at the top floor of the building where our clinic is located. It's easiest to enter from Ralph St., directly behind the clinic, around the corner from PennyCup Coffee. Look for the ramp entrance, then take the elevator to the top floor.
