July News

Greetings,

Third World Newsreel is saddened to hear of Robert Nakamura’s passing – one of the founders of Visual Communications (VC), the groundbreaking Los Angeles media center supporting Asian American filmmaking since 1970. He was a great filmmaker, a great inspiration, and a true activist filmmaker. We send our condolences to his family and the VC team.

On a separate note, we are overwhelmed by the escalation of attacks on our communities—from the crippling of arts, health, education funding and the literal attacks on our friends and neighbors alongside increasing wars and devastation. All of us need to step up—calling representatives, joining groups and organizing.

This month we congratulate fiscal sponsored projects: Sisa Bueno for the premiere of "For Venida, For Kalief" at the Tribeca Film Festival, Sam Wright Smith for the premiere of "Embodied" at Rooftop Films, and Ellen Martinez & Steph Ching for the upcoming PBS broadcast of "Slumlord Millionaire." Also, TWN Workshop graduate Karla Murthy premiered her documentary film "A Gas Station Attendant" at Sheffield Doc Fest.

Lastly, the BlackStar Film Festival is approaching and we are pleased to announce that JT Takagi, our Executive Director, will participate of the Reclaiming the Reel panel.

Please keep reading for more details on upcoming exhibitions and a list of resources for filmmakers.
