EG's historic buildings - more info

EG's historic buildings bring out some strong opinions, from "restore them!" to "destroy them!"

Here's what we've learned and what's still to learn. Spoiler: there's no asbestos in the construction of the buildings.

From the beginning of EG there was a move to keep the historic character of the area. This included the buildings we still have plus several others that have been partly demolished (movie theater at Sloat x Sherman) or completely demolished (there used to be 12 latrines along Sherman!).

The buildings belong to the county. The developer had to run utilities to each building, and has to make a contribution to their restoration, but the developer is not in charge of them.

All EG homeowners have been paying a tax increment (as part of our property taxes) to raise part of the amount needed to restore the buildings. We are working with the county to find out how much we've raised so far and when we can start on the renovation process.

Who can help: if the words "Recognized Obligation Payment Schedule (ROPS)" mean anything to you, we need you to help us get a complete answer to our questions about funding the restoration of the buildings.

Historic Building Survey Results

To see full results of the Building Community survey go to PREG survey page.

Here's a quick summary:

We had 73 responses. Phase 1 and 2 were well represented - we have to figure out how to include our affordable housing neighbors, and more Phase 3 since this is happening in their part of the development (ideas on how to do this? - email us!)

Places to get food are again the most important, and a restroom ranks high. Outdoor spaces for performances and gatherings, and a community garden are nice to have.

Other survey answers show yoga and adult exercises classes were popular. Many people thought woodworking or pottery workshops would be nice, as well as a space with bike repair tools. A tool lending library didn't get much enthusiasm. There were lots of excellent individual comments, see the survey link above to look at them.

The local veterans group is interested in using one of the mess halls as a museum. This would align with the goal of leaning into our historic heritage. If you're interested in helping with this, email us!

Events at Marina Library

There's so much going on at the Marina library, and all the Monterey County Free Library system. The bookmobile is in EG on Saturday mornings with special events for kids and the summer reading program. They even have state park passes you can check out!

Laguna Seca and MORCA

Perhaps you noticed news about the Laguna Seca Recreation Area Master Plan. The goal of the master plan is to "restore, revitalize, and reinvent the Laguna Seca Raceway and Recreational Area." Learn more about their efforts here.

Members of MORCA (Monterey Off Road Cycling Association) are hoping the new plan will include a year-round track for mountain biking, a place where riders of all ages and ability levels could build their skills. There could be significant benefits for our community and for the recreation area itself with more knowledgeable riders on the trails. Learn more at https://morcamtb.org/
