“When he goes in,” is a comment we hear routinely. Most still think that long-term care insurance is just nursing home care. Most don’t want to ever be in a nursing home. Who would?
A colleague continues to remind that long-term care insurance is not nursing home care. It’s stay at home care.
Today most care takes place at home. It’s where we want to be. Where we feel safest and most independent. Where friends and family feel comfortable visiting.
What we don’t know is if or when we might need care. And what will be the level of care required. Skilled nursing home care is 24/7 medical care provided by medical professionals.
Most needing long-term care will require assistance with activities of daily living or prompting as the result of cognitive impairment. That’s not 24/7 medical care.
