President's Note

Dear Friends,

GALA is proud to share with you some exciting news! We recently were approved a grant from the Robinson-Broadhurst Foundation for the Arts Gallery renovation project to support the arts and culture in the community and in the North Central Massachusetts area. We are blessed to be recognized by the grant committees that we are important to their community in supporting the arts.

Since 1984, the Robinson Broadhurst Foundation has been working to improve the quality of life for the residents of Stamford and Worcester, New York, and Winchendon, Massachusetts. To learn more, visit the Robinson Broadhurst Foundation, Inc. website.

Thank you for your donations for the yard sale. The yard sale was very successful! Thanks to those who also came to help that day!

We are now in the process of scheduling carpenters to help start work on the Arts Gallery. Our first steps are to order the shiplap that we want installed on the ceiling and gables. Next, we plan to insulate and sheetrock the second level. If anyone can find a few hours here and there to help stain the shiplap when it arrives, please call me. Our goal is to finish the Arts Gallery and be open in the Spring of 2018 to have more art exhibits and programs.

Summer is a very busy season! We are all working on our arts and preparing for upcoming shows. Try to attend our Plein-air outings and then bring your finished work to our Fall Art Critiques.

My number is 978-407-1419

Sincerely,

Deb Giordano

We'll have art during the day and s'mores by the camp fire at night. Bring your own food, camping stuff, spouses etc. (not necessarily in that order!), and, of course, your art supplies.

We are looking for volunteers to help stain 1600 LF of boards. The boards need to be stained before they go up. If you want to help give us a call at 978-407-1419.

Patty B. Driscoll
The Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey, NH

Matriarch by Patty B. Driscoll
The Jaffrey Civic Center is excited to host an oil exhibit by Birmingham, Alabama artist, Patty B. Driscoll in the first floor Display Case Gallery from June 23rd to July 30th. A frequent visitor to Jaffrey, Patty's career in still life painting arose from her love of the decorative arts and the potential of realism to convey a symbolic narrative. Driscoll distills moments, where light, object, and flowers reveal themselves like characters on a stage. The paintings invite the viewer into an ephemeral world, where compositions are carefully prepared as treats for the eye. Driscoll considers each object as a memory keeper, family artifacts that represent the history of gatherings and celebrations. Awed by the magic of realism, Driscoll draws inspiration from the often overlooked female Still-life painters of the Golden Age; particularly works by Fede Galizia, Giovanna Garzoni, and Maria Van Oosterwyck. Considered the lowest genre of academic art during the Renaissance, still-life painting was considered an acceptable realm of painting for these women to express themselves and earn a living. After years of working with the intricate processes of weaving and cake decorating, Driscoll is attracted to the exacting detail of the seventeenth century masterpieces and their depictions of intimate settings within the domestic interior. Driscoll received her MFA from the California College of Arts after completing her undergraduate work in Studio Art and Art History at Skidmore College. She now lives and works in her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama with her husband, two children, two dogs, and two cats. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

The Jaffrey Civic Center is located at 40 Main Street, Jaffrey, New Hampshire, next to the Library, parking in rear. Hours are Monday-Friday from 10am to 5pm (closed 12-1pm), Sat 10am-2pm. Admission is always free. For more information about us, call 603-532-6527, e-mail us at [email protected], visit our website, or "Like" us on Facebook.

Wildlife Watercolor Exhibit by Jeanette Fournier
The Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey, NH

Birds Eye View by Jeanette Fournier
The Jaffrey Civic Center is hosting a Wildlife Watercolor Exhibit by wildlife artist Jeanette Fournier from June 30th to July 28th in the Auditorium Gallery. Jeanette is a wildlife artist whose work is inspired by nature, particularly the mountainous areas of New Hampshire and Vermont. Growing up with family ties in both the White Mountains of New Hampshire and northern Vermont, she spent a great deal of time in the woods observing and drawing nature. It was during this formative period when she began developing her artistic skills.  She is a self-taught artist and specializes in detailed graphite drawings and illustrative watercolor paintings of animals, birds and nature, which reflect a distinct and original style. Her meticulous attention to detail is one of the hallmarks of her artwork.

Jeanette's work hangs in private collections throughout New England and beyond. Her art has received numerous awards and been accepted in the Art of The Animal Kingdom, the Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors, and the North East Watercolor Society International Exhibition. She has also exhibited with the national organization, The Society of Animal Artists.

Her artwork can be found at the galleries of WREN in Bethlehem, New Hampshire and the Mount Washington Hotel, Bretton Woods, New Hampshire and the Bryan Memorial Gallery in Jeffersonville, Vermont. She is a member of the Society of Animal Artists, the Pencil Art Society, a Signature member of the North East Watercolor Society and the Vermont Watercolor Society, the Women's Caucus for the Arts and the W.R.E.N. organization. The exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.

Penelope Arms
Penelope's love for art was developed early on at her Mother's side sketching at a very young age but it was not until just recently that she has devoted more time to her paintings. Through the years, she has traveled to Mexico several times and the Greek Isles to study with various internationally known instructors. She currently travels to Nashua, New Hampshire each month to study with Steve Previte. Penelope has also been accepted at The Vermont Studio Center on a scholarship program and has won a first place People's Choice Award for emerging artist in the Wet Paint Live event in Springfield, Vermont as well as an award at Stonewall Farms juried show this past Spring. Her works have been shown throughout Vermont and New Hampshire including Southern Vermont Art Center, the Gallery at Okemo Mountain, Southern Vermont Art Center outdoor show, Stonewall Farm, Vermont Welcome Center and the Bellows Walpole Inn in Walpole, New Hampshire.

She is currently or has been a member of the Monadnock Art Association, Saxtons River Art Guild, Vermont Watercolor Society and Southern Vermont Art Center. When asked what her credentials are, she will tell you that they are her brushes, her love of nature, contrasting values of light and dark and her eyes with the vision to see and feel the beauty that is abundant in our universe. Her inspiration is nature which is renewed each day from her beautiful setting in Westminster, Vermont. Her mediums are oil, acrylic and watercolor.

Margo Hrubec
Margo was born and raised in and around New York City. Surrounded by art and art schools for most of her life, she went to the Art Student League on 57th Street, then the first year of college studied art at various studios. She also studied the French language, European art, architecture and history at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. Returning to NYC, she studied graphic design at the Parsons School of Design. Her career has also included graphic design and educational publishing. She has studied various art techniques at The Art Students League, Fashion Institute of Technology, The School for Visual Arts and Parsons School of Design and has worked in various mediums including textiles, fabric design, acrylics, watercolor and oil paints.
