Surviving Summer Skin

Sunburns, bug bites, poison ivy and rashes.... it must be summer! Whether camping, gardening, hiking or just hanging out by the pool, you are bound to experience some of these issues. Here are some dermatologist tips for surviving summer skin.

Sunburns:  To help heal and soothe stinging skin, it is important to begin treating a sunburn as soon as you notice it.
  • Go indoors right away.
  • Take frequent cool baths or showers to help relieve the pain.
  • Use a moisturizer that contains aloe vera or soy to help soothe sunburned skin.
  • Consider taking aspirin or ibuprofen to help with swelling, redness and discomfort.
  • Drink extra water. Sunburns draw fluid away from the body to the surface of the skin causing dehydration.
  • If blisters form do not pop, allow them to heal naturally.
Receiving too much exposure from the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause long-lasting damage to the skin. This damage increases a person’s risk for getting skin cancer, making it critical to protect the skin from the sun.

Poisonous plants: A rash from poison oak or poison sumac is caused by an oil found in these plants called urushiol (you-ROO-shee-all). When this oil touches the skin, it often causes an itchy, blistering rash.
  • Immediately rinse your skin with lukewarm, soapy water.
  • Wash your clothes and anything else that had contact with plant.
  • Do not scratch, this can cause an infection.
  • Take a short luke warm bath in a colloidal oatmeal preparation.
  • Consider calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream for itchy skin.
  • Apply cool compresses to soothe itching.
Go to the emergency room if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, a rash that covers most of the body or the genitals, swollen eyelids, or itching that cannot be eased. If your rash doesn't improve after seven to 10 days, or it may be infected, make and appointment with one of our board-certified dermatologists . We can treat your rash and any infection and help relieve the itch.

Bug bites: Most non-serious bug bites and stings can be treated at home.
  • For painful bites, such as a bee sting, take an over-the-counter painkiller, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
  • For bites that itch, apply an ice pack or an over-the-counter anti-itch cream, such as hydrocortisone. Another option is to take an over-the-counter oral antihistamine.
  • To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack to the bite.
If you experience any serious symptoms after a bug bite, such as a rash, fever, or body aches, see your doctor or one of our  board-certified dermatologists  immediately.
