July 2017
Cultivating Community

A little over seven years ago, an intention was set to create a space for people to come together to practice yoga. It had to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their age, income, race, gender, or beliefs - a true community, based on all inclusiveness and compassionate support for everyone’s journey. Here we are . . .

Each and every person who has walked into Asheville Community Yoga has left an imprint on the heartspace here. Many have been here since the very beginning and continue to support the mission of providing yoga for all, inviting family and friends, co-workers and neighbors. Several have contributed their skills to literally build our yoga center as it has expanded over the years to accommodate our growing community.

As you come to practice, notice those around you. We are all part of something very special. This physical space is not owned by a few. It is the sum total of all of us, breathing together, sweating together, hearts beating in sweet synchronicity on a mission to create a healing space as a community - one and all, all and one.

The journey has only just begun!

Immeasurable gratitude to everyone who has been a part of this effort along the way. Bow to the light of one another and let’s continue to shine our combined light of love and service.

4th of July Schedule
We will have a regular schedule in the morning on Tuesday, July 4th with the last classes of the day being:

12:00-1:00 Vinyasa Flow with Michael

12:15-1:15 Gentle Flow with Jodie

We will be closed for the remainder of the day for everyone to celebrate and enjoy the day!
Studio C Officially OPEN!
We are so thrilled to announce that studio C is now officially open! This space has been 7 years in the making. As we've grown over the years, we have consistently been amazed at the support of the community and how much drive there is for an accessible space to practice yoga.

Newest additions to our space include...
  • Studio C space with all new props
  • New 5-stall women's restroom
  • Two new single-person bathrooms
  • Zen & Now's new space
Within this new space we hope to invite more and more people to explore the benefits of yoga, and have more space to create beautiful relationships.

While we are so excited about the new additions, we know this is not the end to continuing to grow to support our community. The next phase of the expansion will include childcare, a cafe and space for the community to mingle and enjoy each other's company. We look forward to growing with you even more!
We absolutely could not have created this new space without the help of our volunteers. So many community members have offered a wide variety of skills to contribute towards the success of the news space. We've had everything from electricians to carpenters and seamstresses helping to create the new space, and everything from math tutoring to massages and haircuts offered as gift certificates to monetarily support the expansion. We can not thank our community enough for their support!
A special thank you to

Asheville Community Yoga received funding to purchase yoga bolsters for Studio C through the Community Recreation Grants program, which supports organizations t hat promote recreational fitness, health and wellness initiatives, as well as community-based activities that increase recreational opportunities for the community.
Please Park in Our New Parking Lot
As you come in for classes, please pull into the teacher lot and follow the orange cones to the new parking lot behind the building.

Please remember to:
  • Drive slowly!
  • Pull up all the way into your parking space so there is room for cars to move through the lot
  • Exit the parking lot by following the arrows to exit onto Valley Park Rd.
  • As you make your way to the studio, use the walkway instead of walking in the car lane.

All other parking lots are closed as of now.

Thank you for being aware as you enter the space and remaining flexible as the studio expands and updates!

July Service Project - Saucha

Saucha ~ Cleaning Our Community Space

Saucha is the first of the five Niyamas (personal observances), which form the second limb of yoga as described in "The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali." The Sanskrit term can literally be translated as "purity," "cleanliness" and "clearness," and encompasses the cleanliness of body, as well as the purity of mind. This Niyama reminds us to live a healthy life and keep the body and mind pure. Healthy diet, personal hygiene and self-care are also considered saucha. The practice of saucha starts with the external environment and keeping our surroundings clean. It also includes purity of bodies from both outside and inside, relationships and speech.

Now that we have our new studio space, we want it to be extra clean and fabulous!

Join us on Sunday, July 9th from 1:00-3:00pm

Teacher of the Month: Britt Patterson

This month we are honoring Britt as our Teacher or the Month! She is one of the kindest people you'll ever meet, greeting you with a big, warm smile, happy to say hello and chat. Britt has been donating her time at the studio for a while now, offering a very special class: Yoga for Beginners. One could argue this is the most important class we offer. We believe everyone should be able to learn about yoga in a safe space, and Britt is vital to making that a reality. Not only does Britt offer Yoga for Beginners, she also periodically offers her Yoga for Teen Girls workshop, which is inspired by her therapy work for high needs adolescents. It is an honor to have Britt teaching at Asheville Community Yoga, we are so lucky!

To learn more about Britt... Read on!

Britt- Thank you for your years of donating time and love to the center. You create a safe space for people to dive into the world of yoga and receive the benefits. It's truly a gift to have you here! We love you!

Student of the Month: Wayne Scank
Congratulations to Wayne for being the July Student of the Month! Wayne is one of our most consistent students, at the studio multiple times a week without fail. Trying out everything from Meditation to Yin, you'll find him in all different styles of classes. Every time he leaves the studio it's almost a guarantee that he's folded towels and brought a full basket of them into the studios. He's the type of student who will do these acts of service without being asked. He's helped with all sorts of projects around the studio and we're so lucky to have him as a student at Asheville Community Yoga.

We agree, Wayne! You are so helpful around the studio. Thank you for being so genuinely you and sharing your practice with us. We are grateful that you've decided to make Asheville Community Yoga your yoga home!

Volunteers of the Month: Expansion Dream Team
Instead of picking just one Volunteer of the Month, we wanted to honor some of the main folks who have made the expansion possible. By donating their time and skills to the center, we have been able to save tens of thousands of dollars and instead put that money towards the day-to-day functions of the studio and programming. It's people like these that truly make the studio feel like a community. Thank you for all your help!

How has yoga changed your life?

I honestly don't remember how I found Asheville Community Yoga, but I am grateful I did.  Yoga has helped me keep my aging body in better shape.  I have gradually learned how it benefits my mind as well.  I am an anxious person, and I always feel calmer after practicing.  Coming to the studio is something I look forward to, it is a welcoming place.

How has yoga changed your life?

Yoga has changed my life because it had given me a method to access positive experiences. Yoga helps me put things into perspective and it calms and settles my mind. Yoga makes me feel great physically and since I have been practicing I feel like I have more of a sense of well being.

Patrick McMahon

How has yoga changed your life?

In addition to opening up a wider pathway to a spiritual connection with my higher power, Yoga has also helped me physically feel more limber .  It has also helped to heal me emotionally and feel more balanced (excuse the pun).  Yoga helps me to stay in the moment and be more hopeful for a positive future.  It also helps to make me feel more grounded.

Joseph Ransmeier

How has yoga changed your life?

Wow, yoga has changed my life in many ways.  I told Michael recently that I couldn't do the hard physical work that I do if not for yoga.  It keeps me strong and flexible and the practice helps me emotionally and mentally as well.  Just focusing on a regular practice is such a form of self love that it keeps reminding me that I am worth it.  I am 66 years old now and I certainly don't feel old (and hope I don't act old either!).  I believe that continuing to practice yoga will allow me to age with as much strength and grace as possible.

We'd also like to show our appreciation for Joey Lunsford and Josh Andrews for their support! We cannot thank this dream team enough for the hours of service they have donated to the studio. When you're practicing in Studio C, we hope you feel all the love that has been infused into the room through the dedication of these incredible folks.

July Workshops
Full Moon Flow: Mantra, Sound Magic and Meditation with Leaflin
Saturday, July 8th 12:30-2:30pm
This will be a sweetly flowing asana practice supported from inside and out by rhythmic breath, chanting of mantra, and a bath of sound from rattles, flutes and singing bowls. We will end in the deep quiet of meditation, and perhaps some cathartic howling to celebrate and appease that lovely lunar disc in the sky.

Price: $20

Advanced Yoga Redefined with Marylin
Sunday, July 9th 12:30-2:30pm
This workshop is an opportunity to delve deeply into the very heart of the yogic journey. We will explore some of the deeper practices, other than challenging asanas,  to see what they may have to teach us. A variety of pranayamas, meditations, chants, etc will be explored. Each student will be encouraged to reflect on their past and current experience with yoga, to tune into the Inner Teacher, and see what practices are most appealing and most appropriate to turn your attention to now.

Price: $20

Pratyahara: Turning on the Inner Light with Leaflin
Saturday. July 29th 12:30-2:30pm
In this all levels workshop, we will be using a headwrap to assist us in the quieting of mental activity. In the safe container of the group, we will embark on a journey into deep inner space, using gentle movement, simple postures, breath, and sound to become more familiar with our own inner territory. As our minds turn inward and our inner eyes adjust to the darkness, what once seemed unknowable begins to reveal itself.

Price: $20

"When I decided to enroll in the yoga teacher training program at Asheville Community Yoga, my intention was to deepen my practice and possibly teach yoga (if all went well with the training). What I was not anticipating was to experience such a profound sense of love and acceptance of myself … I am extremely grateful for connections made with the instructors, special guests and especially with my cohort of yoga teacher trainees who I now consider part of my extended family. I am so thankful for having committed myself to the gift of this experience. I now look forward to sharing this practice of love with others.”
