Paddles with Purpose
Island Smash Champions Fun, Inclusion, and Giving
|
Did you know a “pickler” is someone passionate about pickleball? We had plenty—plus enthusiastic newcomers—at our inaugural Island Smash Pickleball Tournament on June 21. Held at DDRC’s new indoor courts at our Walters Center in Arvada, the sold-out event was officially refereed by USA Pickleball and featured 16 teams from local businesses, community groups, USA Rugby, Special Olympics DDRC staff and participants.
More than a competition, it was a celebration! Players enjoyed tasty food, gift bags, island-themed décor, and the chance to support DDRC. A special highlight: handcrafted wooden “mini-paddles” made by longtime volunteer and former staff member Ron Marquez, offered as keepsakes for the teams.
| |
The fun began with a clinic led by Chris Beal, who shared tips and her experience teaching pickleball to individuals with Parkinson’s, early-onset dementia, and Special Olympics athletes —a reminder of the inclusive spirit behind the event.
Island Smash was a joyful success supporting DDRC’s programs for people with disabilities. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for photos!

Empowering Growth
A Grateful Parent Reflects on Early Intervention Support
| | | DDRC's Early Intervention program believes every child deserves the chance to thrive–and that early support (from birth to age three) makes a lasting impact. One grateful mom recently shared how much this support meant to her family. | |
Tiffany Sharp, part of DDRC's Early Intervention team, helped their young son with developmental delays grow stronger, more confident, and independent.
"It's been amazing to see him running, jumping, and playing," said mom Jessica. "Tiffany helped our toddler explore the world and empowered us to support him."
DDRC provides evaluations, therapy, and strategies for children with developmental delays or disabilities, helping both kids and caregivers succeed.
As their son graduated from the program, the family reflected: "Tiffany's warmth, expertise, and patience have meant so much. We're excited to watch our son grow using the tools she gave us."
Thank you, Tiffany, for making a difference!

| | Raising the Bar at DDRC and Chris's Achievement | | At DDRC, our person-centered, high-quality support starts with empowered staff. Through training and strong ethics, we equip our staff to help people live their best lives. One way we do this is through our partnership with the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) E-Badge Academy—a nationally recognized platform that builds and celebrates excellence. | | |
We’re proud to announce that Chris Hansen, Day Program Manager at the DDRC Walters Center, is the first on our Frontline Supervisor (FLS) team to earn the prestigious FLS E-Badge certification. This places Chris and DDRC among a select group leading in ethical, person-centered support.
The certification involves over 25 hours of targeted training and 14 reflective testimonials documenting real-life leadership, ethical decision-making, and positive outcomes.
Chris shared that a key benefit was “the chance to learn about and consider things from the perspective of a bigger view than just the department I am involved with.” That broader insight will strengthen his leadership and support our mission.
The NADSP E-Badge Academy honors the competence, integrity, and leadership of DSPs and FLS nationwide. With Chris’s achievement, DDRC isn’t just participating—we’re helping set the standard.

Positive, Persistent, Proud
Meet Todd from Home2Suites
| | “Every company should have a couple of Todds!” exclaimed Matthew Long, Assistant GM at Home2Suites by Hilton in Lakewood, as he stood beside Todd and Todd’s supervisor, Heather Potter. “He’s always on time, brings great energy, and starts our day with a fist bump.” Heather laughed and nodded in agreement. | | |
Todd, who’s been a dedicated Houseman at Home2Suites for nearly two years, gets to work by bus and on foot, rain or shine. His positive attitude and reliability have made a big impression. From cleaning and vacuuming to watering plants and jumping in wherever needed, Todd takes pride in keeping the property looking great. “I like making things look nice,” he said with a smile.
In recognition of his hard work, Home2Suites named Todd Employee of the Month. “It made me feel proud,” he shared, adding how much he enjoys the friendly team—and that they’ve even taken an interest in his hobbies like bowling and anime.
Todd lives independently in an apartment with support from DDRC’s Residential Services and receives job coaching through DDRC Employment Supports. “We’re so happy for Todd,” said his Employment Specialist, Amanda McConnell. “He’s come so far, especially after the challenges COVID caused in the workforce.”
And what does Todd love most about his job? “Getting paid!” he said with a grin—something we can all appreciate.
