July Updates from Impact100 DC

Summer greetings to Impact100 DC members and friends!

There is a lot of activity going on behind the scenes now that our 2024 grants cycle has concluded.

  • The grants team had a productive retreat last weekend building next year’s calendar and making revisions in processes and documents based on our experience (and your feedback) this year.
  • The membership and communications team will meet next week to focus on recruitment, retention, and engagement going forward.
  • We are working to finalize our first strategic plan, which will provide us with a framework for growth over the next three years.

Stay tuned for lots of information in these areas and more beginning in early September. In the meantime, if you’re interested in getting more involved and want to have a conversation about possibilities, I would love to speak with you (just email me at avaughn@impact100dc.org)!

Last month we awarded our 2024 grants to five amazing organizations: BEST Kids, who received our Impact grant of $100,000; and DC Greens, First Generation College Bound, Playtime Project, and The MusicianShip, who received mission-based grants of $15,500. We will share updates on all of these organizations over the course of our next cycle.

Those of you who participated in the grant review process know that our grantees were selected from a pool of 15 highly qualified semi-finalists; the choice to narrow down the field felt almost impossible. We are mission-bound to continue to elevate the work of these extraordinary organizations as well as our finalists, and to look for opportunities to deepen and strengthen the partnerships.

Today, we feature four of the organizations; stay tuned for the rest of the semifinalists in our August update. I’m sure you will fall in love with these organizations as well—if you haven’t already!

Happy summer, and stay cool!

One World Education

From their website:

One World’s mission is to transform students into writers with voice, knowledge, and purpose. Our vision is that all students become effective writers and communicators.

The One World Program started in Southeast DC at the SEED Public Charter School in 2007. Teacher Eric Goldstein was frustrated that only 20% of students were turning in their writing assignments. He challenged them to research and write about issues that mattered to them. Engagement soared when students wrote about social justice topics directly relevant to their lives.

Using a curriculum that broke down the instructional and learning process, his students began turning their research and writing into essays and presentations, which students called their One World Assignment. With the support of fellow teachers and school leadership, Eric incorporated One World Education as a nonprofit organization a year later to serve students across the city. One World has led the largest writing program in Washington, DC, for six years and has worked in Richmond, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore schools.

Young Playwrights’ Theater inspires young people to realize the power of their own voices. YPT provides inspiration, tools, and opportunities for young and emerging artists to develop and share their stories. We prioritize young people who are targeted by systems of oppression, and we also collaborate with people of all ages who are invested in the ways in which theater can transform lives and communities.

Everyone deserves high-quality theater education that centers their voices. Young Playwrights’ Theater provides inspiration, tools, and opportunities for young and emerging artists to develop and share their stories. Since 1995 we’ve provided young people across Washington, DC and beyond with performing arts programming that builds their confidence and showcases their self-expression.

Conservation Nation

From their website:

What does a scientist look like to you?

When asked to draw a scientist, only 25 percent of 16-year-old girls draw a woman.

Conservation has an inclusion problem. The current structure of the profession makes it harder for people of color, Indigenous peoples, and women to get involved.

But we need diversity and inclusion to drive innovation. The earth is experiencing a biodiversity crisis, and we need to change now to save it.

Our work brings more people to the table, nurtures the diversity of the field, and drives novel thinking. The survival of thousands of species — including our own — hangs in the balance.
