Minnesota Brownfields has presence at National Health Impact Assessment Conference in Washington, DC

Minnesota Brownfields participated in the National Health Impact Assessment Meeting in Washington, DC June 16-17. Since 2013, Minnesota Brownfields, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Health and the City of Duluth, has been developing a health impact assessment tool for brownfield redevelopement. A prototype of the tool was presented at the conference. A free follow up presentation and feedback session is scheduled for Thursday, July 9 from 1:30-2:30 at Surly Brewing.

Metropolitan Council awards 16 brownfield grants
The Metropolitan Council has awarded grants to 16 different projects in their most recent round of brownfield cleanup grants through the livable communities program. Projects include soil remediation at the former Superior Plating site and asbestos abatement and soil remediation in Hopkins for affordable housing. Read more here.
MPCA collecting stakeholder input on proposed SRVs

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is collecting stakeholder input on the proposed SRV changes on July 14 from 10:00am-12:00pm at the Dakota Lodge in St. Paul. This meeting will specifically address use of the SRVs and BTVs by the VIC, RCRA and Superfund programs only. Please RSVP if you plan on attending by emailing  SRVcomments.pca@state.mn.us  with your organization, the number and names of people attending and a contact phone number by Friday, July 10, 2015.

Minnesota Brownfields will convene a separate remediation stakeholder input session on July 29 for organizations who sent comments to the MPCA re proposed changes.     

Consultants sought for Ford site development
St. Paul seeks a real estate development consultant for the 125-acre former Ford Plant site. The consultant will work with Ford Motor Co. and a variety of stakeholders to develop the property. More info from the Mpls St. Paul Business Journal here

Technical Assistance to Brownfields workshops offered in Hutchinson and Winona
Minnesota Brownfields, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Kansas State University, the MN Department of Employment & Economic Development (DEED) and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency are teaming up to offer free Technical Assistance to Brownfields (TAB) workshops on July 14 and 15 in Winona and Hutchinson, respectively. The Winona workshop will cover brownfields definitions, funding resources, and local case studies. Hutchinson's workshop will assist attendees in preparing future EPA Brownfields grants. EPA takes position on vapor intrusion
The EPA has released guides on vapor intrusion mitigation and assessment. These guides are applicable to residential and nonresidential settings. Read more from the EPA here.
EPA EJSCREEN environmental justice screening tool now live

EPA's EJSCREEN, a powerful environmental justice screening and mapping tool that uses high resolution maps combined with demographic and environmental data to identify places with potentially higher environmental burdens and vulnerable populations is now live. EJSCREEN's color-coded maps, bar charts, and reports enable users to better understand areas in need of increased environmental protection, health care access, housing, infrastructure improvement, community revitalization, and climate resilience. CDFA Brownfields Project Virtual Marketplace workshop this month
The next CDFA Brownfields Project Marketplace Workshop is July 27-30. The CDFA Brownfields Project Marketplace provides communities the opportunity to receive special assistance with brownfields redevelopment projects. Communities will detail important information on a site and engage in open discussion with financial and brownfields experts. The purpose of these discussions is to provide initial suggestions for the communities' redevelopment plans and financing sources. CDFA will provide two in-person and two virtual marketplaces each year. More info here.
