Strategy: Resiliency Hubs
As a volunteer member of the Baltimore City Resiliency Hub Advisory Committee, Joan Plisko is lending her expertise to help create four pilot hub sites in Baltimore. A resiliency hub consists of a building or set of buildings and neighboring outdoor space that will provide shelter, backup electricity, and access to resources such as food, fresh water, ice, and charging stations in the event of an emergency. Read more about climate and resilience on the Baltimore Office of Sustainability website and on the PSS Blog.
Integration: Pearlstone Center
Joan Plisko has joined a coalition to guide Pearlstone Center’s Community Sustainability Initiative. Pearlstone Center is a national leader in Jewish Outdoor Food and Environmental Education programming,  serving more than 16,000 guests each year through retreats, school groups, and family visits.
The Coalition’s mission is to embody and  inspire the ecological wisdom of Jewish tradition in order to foster a more sustainable future and  enhance Baltimore's vibrancy. Through education, advocacy, and action, the coalition aims to  increase Jewish Baltimore’s contribution to environmental health and bolster environmental practices  and values in schools, synagogues, agencies, organizations, businesses, and homes. Results: Chesapeake Bay Trust Mini Grants!

As part of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Chesapeake Bay Trust (CBT), Joan Plisko has been participating in sessions geared to helping CBT extend its grant offerings to a wider audience and variety of projects. For example, the Community Engagement Mini Grant program for 2016-2017 opened on July 1, 2016. PSS encourages healthcare facilities and faith-based institutions, among others, to apply for eligible projects such as:

  • Community gardens,
  • Community clean-ups,
  • Projects that combine art with an increased awareness of stormwater issues,
  • Projects that beautify communities, capture rain water and improve wildlife habitat, and
  • Projects that educate and get residents outdoors.

Contact Joan Plisko for assistance in completing the grant process.
