Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park , replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.
Construction and Design Updates
In June, crews continued construction activities along the corridor, including:


Area 1 West: Reston Avenue to Riva Ridge Drive:

  • Continued storm sewer installation.  
  • Relocated communication lines.  
  • Installed underdrain.
  • Continued construction of stormwater management pond west of Baron Cameron Avenue.
  • Performed cement stabilization of the subgrade, placed cement-treated aggregate, and placed base asphalt for future eastbound lanes.
  • Prepared for shifting eastbound and westbound traffic to the south.
  • Built a retaining wall west of Baron Cameron Avenue.

Area 1 East: Baron Cameron Avenue to Carpers Farm Way

  • Completed cement stabilization of the subgrade, placed cement-treated aggregate, and placed base asphalt for temporary pavement in the median.
  • Shifted the eastbound Route 7 lanes towards the median.
  • Began reconstruction of the Delta Glen Court pavement across the future eastbound Route 7 lanes.


  • Stage 2 construction pending right-of-way acquisition.


  • Difficult Run/Colvin Run area: Continued relocation of communication utilities.
  • Prepared for start of temporary Colvin Run realignment in July.
  • Prepared for start of Carper's Farm Way triple box culvert installation in July.


  • Continued construction of stormwater management pond near Trotting Horse Lane.
  • Placed asphalt for temporary pavement in the median. 
  • Completed temporary shoulder strengthening along the eastbound lanes. 
  • Prepared for shifting eastbound and westbound traffic to the south between Atwood Road and Lewinsville Road.

Design work continues for lighting and landscaping. Third-party utility design is also ongoing.

In Case You Missed It
Throughout the summer months, drivers can expect lane shifts on eastbound and westbound Route 7, temporary traffic pattern changes, and detours on some neighborhood streets along the corridor between Reston Avenue and Jarrett Valley Drive. Click here for previously-issued traffic alerts.

Work will occur during the daytime and overnight hours, and all homes, businesses, and public facilities will remain accessible via posted detour routes. Additional traffic alerts with detailed information will be sent out in the upcoming weeks as the work advances.
