Historic Arts District Meetings!

The county is asking for community input on all our historic buildings. Gensler will run the meetings (more info on them below). They have an impressive line-up of consultants looking at the condition of all the buildings and researching local market factors.

But the future is up to us.

There are some tough decisions ahead:

• How many of the buildings can be restored, and at what cost?
• What uses would be best for EG and our visitors?
• If we can't afford to restore them all, which buildings have priority?
• If we can't do everything we want, which activities have priority?

Everyone's input is vital! Especially folks who live in Phase 3 since it's all happening in your backyard

Comanche's Grave and

Sargent MacDonald Tribute

If you've hiked out Watkins Gate you might have seen Comanche's Grave on the far side of the pond at Watkins Gate and Hennekens Ranch Rd.

This site was recently restored by descendants of Sgt MacDonald - yes the same Sgt MacDonald as the trail. It's a reminder that the East Garrison was founded for the cavalry division of the Presidio of Monterey.

Directions: out Watkins Gate, left at the kiosk on Trail 52, then turn right on Trail 14. Sit on the bench and rest for a bit, read the plaque. Here is the story on KSBW

Following Artspace Consulting's departure from the East Garrison Historic District project, the County of Monterey is looking for a new team to take a fresh look at the site's future. This work includes assessing community and market interest, evaluating the condition of the historic buildings and the cost of rehabilitating them, and developing an updated vision for the District that reflects more than 20 years of change since the original plan was created.

Gensler is a global design and planning firm with experience helping communities revitalize historic places and plan for long-term growth. The firm is well positioned to lead this effort because of its expertise in redevelopment, adaptive reuse of existing buildings, and large-scale planning projects. Gensler also previously worked on Monterey County's Facilities Master Plan, giving the team familiarity with the County's goals, standards, and operational needs.

Ways to Get Involved

• "Adopt a Road" - Help clean InterGarrison - vests and trash grabbers provided. Contact Kiwanis of EG for more information
• Broom Bashing is ongoing. If you'd like to get some exercise and help our native plants by removing invasive broom plants, HERE is the link
