Letter to TEA Commissioner Morath for Texas School Districts to be Reimbursed 100% for COVID-19 Expenses
Texas' school districts have had to absorb enormous costs associated with the shift to temporary remote learning as well as other complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, there will be additional changes to instruction and the placement of learning during the 2020-21 school year, requiring millions more.

The State of Texas has received billions in CARES Act funding that can be used to support our education system. That is why I stand with my colleagues as we request districts get 100% reimbursement for COVID-19 expenses.

Local March & Protest Attendance
In June, I joined over 200 local students for a peaceful march and protest at Berker Park in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Their energy, passion, and dedication to justice is admirable, and I hope to continue to make them proud in the 87th Legislative Session. Our young people have the power to bring change, and I am honored to represent them in Austin.
Black Lives Matter Statement
I wrote a statement in support of the work being done by the Black Lives Matter Movement, and denounce any police brutality. While we strive for a better future, we must take it upon ourselves to do the work today. We must move thoughts into action--not through violent acts, but through the ballot box and beyond. It is my sincerest hope that you join me in supporting black citizens, and continue your support until we can get the freedom, equality, and dignity that everyone deserves.

The Search for Private Vanessa Guillen Continues

Private First Class Vanessa Guillen is still missing, and has been missing since April. I have written to Lieutenant General Robert White to ask for answers, and demand swifter action in the search for Vanessa. As a member of the Defense and Veterans' Affairs Committee, I believe that all that serve our country deserve to be protected in return.

If you have any information, I ask that you please visit findvanessaguillen.com

D.A.C.A. Program Continues
This month, the U.S. Supreme Court voted in favor of the DACA program. In 2012, President Obama authorized the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), enabling qualifying individuals who came to the U.S. as children to request consideration for deferred action. DACA allows qualifying non-U.S. citizens to remain in the country for two years, subject to renewal, while also providing them work authorization. ( ADL )
Town Hall Recap
On June 26th, I had the pleasure of hosting a virtual June Town Hall. Our special guests included Dr. Robert Stein (of Rice University) and Judge Clay Jenkins, Dallas County Judge. The focus of this discussion was the July 14th election, and what the county is doing to ensure our safety.

Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program
I am proud to announce that nominations for the 2020-2021 Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program (TASSP) have opened for the 2020-2021 academic school year.

This scholarship supports students who choose to participate in a college Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program and commit to serving in our armed forces. I would love to nominate a deserving student in District 102. I ask that you help me share this message so that as many students as possible have access to this great opportunity.
Gov. Abbott & TDEM to Provide Free Masks to All Texans Tested at State-Run COVID-19 Mobile Testing Sites
On June 24th, Governor Abbott released a statement alongside TDEM (Texas Department of Emergency Management), to provide free masks to all Texans who are tested at State-Run COVID-19 mobile testing sites. Beginning June 25th, each person who receives a COVID-19 test at any of these sites will receive four masks to take home with them.

This news comes after Gov. Abbott recognized that there have been statewide surges, and record highs for positive cases and hospitalizations.
