Upcoming CGN Updates & Events

CGN is launching a new website on August 1st! 🎉

The Center for Global Nursing is excited to launch a website to enhance our work advancing nursing and advanced practice in global health sciences.

Our website will serve as a central hub for information about CGN's educational initiatives, collaborators, and members to foster a vibrant community of nursing professionals. By providing access to our programs, events, and collaborative opportunities, we aim to empower nurses and APPs and support pathways for them to engage in global health solutions.

CGN Travel Award recipients go abroad!

CGN members Roxana Benavides, NP, General Surgery, and APP manager Neil Wiegand, PA-C, recently traveled for eight days to Nuevo Progresso, Guatemala, to engage in global health work. As part of a long-term collaborative initiative to improve surgical care in Nuevo Progresso, Roxana and Neil were integral members of a surgical team that worked with local partners to provide free surgical care at the Hospital de La Familia. The cases included hernia repairs, cholecystectomies, and the removal of masses. They also treated 50 pediatric patients.

As a bilingual-speaker Roxana aided in the integration with the Guatemalan team and patients and oversaw morning and evening rounds, in addition to scrubbing into the OR.

Neil has worked in Guatemala before, while this was Roxana's first trip. Their efforts demonstrated the impact of APPs on global health. To learn more, join us as Roxana and Neil present about their trip at an upcoming quarterly meeting.

GICS Wound Care Survey

Pediatric Wound Care Survey

The following survey is an attempt to find out how best nurses care for Pediatric Acute and Chronic Surgical Wounds in your countries. This survey is designed to collect evidence from nurses about wound care.

This survey is brief and should only take about 5-10 minutes to complete.

The results of this survey will be used to create evidence-based guidelines and recommendations that can be used by nurses around the world to improve wound care for children.

Your input is essential in making this happen, and I hope you will take the time to participate.

Your responses will be kept anonymous, and your participation is completely voluntary.

The results of this survey will be published on the website of the Global Initiative for Children's Surgery (GICS) and the International Society of Pediatric Wound Care (ISPWC). By participating in this survey, you will be helping to improve wound care for children everywhere.

Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

2024 CGN Cultural Humility Course

We received great feedback from last year's participants and are excited to continue to offer our 3-hour introductory course on cultural humility for all UCSF nurses, APPs, and faculty. Cultural humility is the cornerstone of all global health work and our expertise on this topic is essential to optimize equitable partnerships and cross-cultural collaborations.

Our own UCSF nursing/APP faculty and staff are facilitating the course. Looking forward to seeing you there!

There is no cost for the course at this time. 3 CEUs will be provided.

Time: 9 am - 12 pm

Member Spotlight

Jennifer Huggins-Zapeta MSN, RN, FNP

Assistant Clinical Professor, UCSF School of Nursing

My interest in global health derives from my work amongst our global community in the Bay Area. I am an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF School of Nursing, and my clinical practice is at La Clinica de la Raza, a community clinic in Oakland, California, serving primarily the Latinx community many of whom are recent immigrants to the US. I have been at La Clinica for the past 9 years, providing full-scope primary care to patients ranging in age from adolescents to elders, and serve as the clinic’s HIV Lead Clinician.

Serving an international, marginalized community living with HIV or at high- risk of HIV infection, I am reminded daily of the importance of cultural humility and patient-centered care. Alongside an integrative healthcare team, we focus on promoting treatment as HIV prevention, creating systems to optimize linkage to care for people living with HIV, and expanding the overall HIV program at La Clinica. I am dedicated to continuing my care and research in this community and to introducing new clinicians to the complexities of providing HIV care and to the value of providing patient-centered care with an integrative care team model.

It has been a joy to work with the UCSF Nursing Global Health Institute team on curriculum development and facilitation of the Cultural Humility course and I look forward to participating in and expanding our global health community.

Seed Grant Program

A New Funding Opportunity honoring Nancy E.

Adler’s legacy of supporting research on

social determinants of health

The Center for Health and Community in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is pleased to share a new request for pilot research proposals. The Nancy E. Adler Seed Grants Program (ASG) will support projects focused on social and behavioral determinants of health. Annual budgets should not exceed $25,000, and total budgets should not exceed $35,000. Proposals will be considered on a competitive basis through September 16, 2024. This opportunity is restricted to UCSF postdocs and junior faculty. The Institute for Global Health Sciences is pleased to introduce a new part-time track for their MS in Global Health Sciences program!

This two-year, in-person program is great for those looking to advance their career in global health. Whether you want to keep working while earning a degree, or simply want two years to complete a master’s program, this program could be ideal for you.

The Roving Community Health Initiative

Community Opportunity

The Roving Community Health Initiative is a team of UCSF clinicians (RN, NP, PA) who work alongside community organizations and volunteers to provide vaccinations, wound care, and harm reduction in San Francisco, primarily in the Tenderloin and South of Market. Most of the work is on "roving teams" serving our unhoused and marginally housed community members.

Shifts are paid but voluntary and on top of your regular position at UCSF. RCHI covers your time (including OT when applicable), so your home department is not charged.

You need manager approval to pick up shifts, and shifts should be fine with your home department schedule.

Regular opportunities are:

Thursday and Saturday
11 am to 4:30 pm (5 hours paid after 30-minute break deducted)

The first hour of each shift includes prep and orientation for newcomers. Clinicians go out in pairs to work together and support each other. Newcomers are paired with somebody with experience.
