To Force is to Break

When I was about 10 years old, my neighbors hired me to feed their cats while they were on vacation. One day, when I went to unlock the door to their house, the key wouldn’t turn. So I tried to force it. I turned the key so hard it broke in the lock. 


My father, who is French, had an expression he used in my childhood moments of impatience: Forcer, c’est casser.” It translates to “To force is to break.”


To force is to break. Forcing may be something you feel compelled to do, but it rarely gets you the outcome you want. It’s a notion that holds true for so much more than keys and doors…

Home Visiting Supervisors

Cultivate Psychological Safety


“It felt so good to be heard,” said a Home Visiting Supervisors Institute participant after being handed the microphone. “I am an introvert and never expected to get so vulnerable. But my (activity) partner’s warmth made space for me to share a difficult experience.

 

Things usually get real like this at the HVSI, an annual event for leaders of early childhood home visiting programs across Arizona. The Institute supports participants to build skills to become more effective, authentic, and courageous leaders. This year, the Institute focused on a topic that can make or break an organization: psychological safety.

The American Family Act



In 2021, the Child Tax Credit (CTC) was expanded through monthly payments. But the expanded CTC expired at the beginning of 2022. Representatives Rosa DeLauro (CT), Suzan DelBene (WA), and Ritchie Torres (NY) have introduced the American Family Act to make permanent the expanded and improved monthly Child Tax Credit.
