... A monthly newsletter from the Lisner-Louise-Dickson-Hurt Home
July 2018

Dear Friends,

Connecting to the greater community is something we all do, something that enriches our lives and expands our network of friends. It is a cornerstone of our journey here at the Home. We connect with residents, their families, and friends and with others who value our efforts on behalf of low and modest income elders of our city.
Our enewsletter always mentions the charitable and corporate foundations that so generously support the Home. These foundations work to better our community in ways that will enhance the mission of many local not-for-profits. The community also has a number of businesses that have engaged with us in promoting our work here on Western Avenue. I want to send out a special "thank you" to Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar (223 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE on Capitol Hill) for its unwavering devotion to the Home. The restaurant has displayed the works of art of our resident artists routinely at New Year's celebrations and periodically throughout any given year. Recently, Sonoma has begun "The Hill Sip and Paint" program, a Sunday afternoon/evening devoted to encouraging attendees to express themselves on canvas while enjoying a glass of wine and some of Sonoma's signature finger foods. A portion of the proceeds are gifted to the Home following each event.
Our Resident Art Director, Chris Alvear, leads the class of approximately a dozen or more attendees and, of course, is always promoting the Home. I have personally attended these events and can tell each of you first-hand that the Home is receiving accolades for the work we do. The networking opportunities are plentiful while, at the same time, everyone can enjoy a Sunday of fun and self-expression.
I encourage each of you to consider joining in a sip and paint experience when the program resumes after summer vacations. And, too, I would urge each of you to reach out to your family and friends and talk about the Home and the work that we do. Our partnerships are rich with caring and support. Your efforts, like that of Sonoma, serve to strengthen our mission of service. We are truly grateful.

Caribbean Day Festivities
What started as a small celebration in the CRF dining room of the Home many years ago has become one of the most favorite summer festivities for the residents, "Caribbean Day." Since then, both the Dietary and Activities departments moved the celebration onto the courtyard patio complete with decorations, pina coladas, and a steel band. Among the traditional foods served are, of course, oxtails, jerk chicken, Jamaican patties, rice and beans, plantains, and coco bread. You know it's officially summer when the Home kicks it off with Caribbean Day!

On June 28th, the staff of the Home recognized the end of Eid-al-Fitr, a three-day festival celebrating the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The staff from all departments brought in a variety of home-cooked dishes to share and learn more about each other. This tradition, now in its second year, allows us to embrace our cultural and ethnic diversity that exists among the staff of the Home.
