Summer Camp Continues to Thrill
|
|
Summer Camp 2019 officially started June 28
th
with the arrival of our Leaders in Training (LIT) and Counsellor Skill Development (CSD) campers. These are both 4-week sessions for mid-teens which are designed to motivate each participant to develop their personal skills, to challenge themselves, step out of comfort zones and become the leaders of tomorrow. This is the pinnacle of a camper’s experience.
June 30
th
saw the arrival of the rest of our campers including the Overnight Campers, Intermediates, Pre-Leadership Campers, Junior Canoe Trippers, Day Campers and Environment Centre Day Campers. Each division provides appropriate opportunities for individual challenge and growth while expanding each camper’s interest and development of new skills.
Summer Staff are 70 strong and keep each camper engaged, connected to nature and to each other. They have many talents – everything from arts and crafts to sailing and canoeing, to drama and games, ropes, night hikes and nature connection. They are busy 24/7, but their efforts make Camp Kawartha one of the highest rated camps in the province.

Surf 'n' Turf Gala Celebrates 30 Years
|
|
The annual Surf ‘n’ Turf Gala Dinner & Auction was hosted by Camp Kawartha's Board of Directors on June 22
nd
.
For 30 years this event has treated guests to a fabulous meal, great entertainment, and raised funds to help kids from limited means to get to camp for the experience of a lifetime.
It was another successful year, netting over $20,000.00 for the Subsidy/Sponsorship Fund and educational programming.
“We are gratified that the local and larger community have supported this event faithfully for more than 30 years.” stated Executive Director, Jacob Rodenburg. “Thousands of children have benefited from the goodwill of guests, auction donors, and the hard work of organizers year after year. I thank everyone who has attended through the years and given so gladly.”

Thank you to Ellwood Hamilton Bus Lines
|
Many thanks are extended to Jeff Howie and his team at Ellwood Hamilton Bus Lines for the tremendous work and support they provided the Camp in preparation for our canoe and kayak tripping and adventure season.
Our new (to us) bus is now an important part of our Camp programs as we transport hundreds of children and youth to provincial parks for canoe trips or camping adventures. Jeff kindly located a suitable bus and refitted it with new seats and seatbelts ensuring that we can safely and reliably carry the campers and their gear to their put-in destinations.
We extend a warm thank you to Jeff and everyone at Ellwood Hamilton Bus Lines for their generosity.

Abby's Garden Continues to Develop Thanks to Scott Concrete & Ed O'Brien
|
The volunteer team redeveloping the Memorial Garden have taken some great strides to date. The new planting boxes have been built, positioned and levelled, and thanks
to a donation of two yards of triple mix
from Scott Concrete Products, and mulch from Ed O’Brien the boxes are full and awaiting plants, and the pathways are paved with cedar.
Our Kinder Day Campers will now help by planting some of the boxes with herbs, annuals and perennials.

Camp Kawartha Shoreline Naturalization Project
August 17, 2019 9:00 am, Camp Kawartha 1010 Birchview Road
|
|
Environment Council
, Camp Kawartha and a number of generous donors, including landscape architect Helen Batten of Basterfield & Associates Inc., are partnering to
naturalize a large section of the Camp’s shoreline
. This will help protect the lake and wildlife, enhance the Camp’s environmental education programs and enable Environment Council to show lake residents the advantages of natural shorelines.
Come and be part of this exciting project. We need at least two dozen energetic volunteers to plant over 1,000 native shrubs and wildflowers, under the guidance of our landscaper.
