Kinder Campers Can Enjoy Camp Activities at Home
|
|
Kinder Camp is such a wonderful experience, as it is both an introduction to the wonders of camp for our youngest campers and an opportunity for our Kinder Camp staff and teachers to teach routines and experiences our Kinder Campers can expect when they enter Kindergarten. This is a particularly interesting year as we all go into the fall without exactly knowing what that will look like.
|
|
With that in mind, we are considering offering some virtual workshops in August for you and your Kinder Campers. This would include online crafts and stories, activities to use in the outdoors and in nature, prepping for the fall for both campers and parents and a Q&A with some of our kindergarten teachers, EAs and Kinder Camp staff. If you are interested in getting more information, please e-mail Adam Strasberg, Summer Camp Director at
adam@campkawartha.ca
.
In the meantime, visit
CK at Home
this summer for campfires, activities, crafts and eco activities.

Care to Volunteer on August 15th?
|
|
Phase Two of the Environment Council shoreline restoration project at Camp Kawartha is a go!
After careful thought and planning, Camp Kawartha and the Environmental Council's Shoreline Protection Team have decided to proceed with site preparation and planting of the woodland section of the shoreline.
The woodland section, just to the west of the Campitheatre, features a fairly steep slope, so we need energetic, agile volunteers to help plant more than 250 native shrubs, perennial wildflowers, ferns and grasses in this area.
|
|
Volunteers will work in two separate small groups of 10 or fewer and will be requested to follow all COVID-19 health and safety requirements, including wearing masks and providing full names, phone numbers and email addresses when they sign up.
To further ensure safety, we ask that volunteers wear boots or very sturdy shoes, and bring their own planting trowels, work gloves, drinking water, snacks and any personal items needed.
Planting is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, starting at 9 a.m.
and is expected to take about two hours. Families with children 12 and over are welcome.
To volunteer, please email info@environmentcouncil.ca and provide full contact information.

The
Thrive 100
Campaign Continues
to Support Camp Kawartha's Recovery
|
|
Thrive 100 is a response to the revenue shortage the Camp is now experiencing. Summer Camp families have been generous, providing the Camp with
$12,000
of our
$100,000 goal
. Each week we see parents contributing what they can to help sustain us -- $25, $50, $250!
It all adds up!
Anyone
may contribute, and in return we will acknowledge all donors to the Thrive 100 campaign in the following manner:
|
|
Donors will also be named in our Annual Report, invited to our Annual General Meeting, and listed on our website recognition wall.

The Maintenance Team is Using this Summer to their Advantage
|
|
The lack of campers on site because of the provincially mandated closure of overnight summer camps has provided a unique opportunity for our Maintenance Team. Mike, Jeremy, Jon and the summer students are repairing and renovating buildings, systems, and the grounds, giving the main facilities some welcome TLC!
Camp Kawartha was lucky this year to be approved for four summer student positions through the
Canada Summer Jobs
grant from the
Government of Canada
. All of them have all been funnelled into the work of the Maintenance Department and the Camp is starting to look fresher, even renewed.

 |
This is the new watering system for the parking lot garden. Note the eavestrough Jeremy put in that feeds directly into the holding tank!

Sebastian is moving earth to replenish the soil on the playing field.
|
|
 |
|
 |
Aiya & the team are upgrading the trails -- brush removal, new signage, and upgraded QR Codes are all necessary.

Even the main office is getting
a new coat of varnish and paint from Jon!

Wow, what a difference
100 years
can make! The shoreline looks entirely different, and catch the neckties on the two men on the left! This photo was taken circa 1925 and is just one of the photographs we found at the Peterborough Museum and Archives. There are dozens, and we have plans to make them available through our Gift Store in 2021.
If you have any old photos or letters home to Mom and Dad that you can share with us, please contact Susan –
philanthropy@campkawartha.ca
– and we’d be happy to take them or make copies for our own archive as we approach our 100th year!

We have a lovely outdoor area known affectionately as the "Campitheatre" where you can say your vows overlooking Clear Lake. Take photos at the waterfront, in front of our historic log cabin, or anywhere the beauty of nature inspires you.

Our Community Campfires have been a Great Success!
|
|
Our launching event each summer camp session is our traditional campfire held on the 1st night of each session. Campfire is a time when the whole camp comes together in our ‘Campitheatre’ to introduce themselves and perform songs or skits as a cabin. Our Campfires are a celebration of the camp spirit that we want to keep alive in 2020.
This summer we have been streaming Community Campfires on our
YouTube Channel
on Sundays corresponding to the would-be start dates of each session! Check out our past sessions and join us for the next one coming-up on
Sunday, August 9th at 7pm.

Camp Kawartha & the Canadian Camps Industry
Need Your Help!
|
|
Unfortunately, like many other businesses, the camp industry as a whole is in an extremely difficult situation with the complete loss of revenue due to Covid-19 this summer.
As we continue to tie up the loose ends from 2020, including the completion of our refund process, the price has been the loss of 100% of our operating revenues this summer. As a charitable organization, some donations are trickling in, but the impact has been tremendous as we plan on how to sustain our operations with the task of making summer camp operational again in 2021.
Your support, patience and belief in what we do at Camp Kawartha has been overwhelmingly positive throughout this new normal and has fortified our resolve to make use of all resources to make 2021, our 100th anniversary, as momentous as possible.
In order to help get us there,
we are asking you for your help, as camps throughout Canada are doing the same, to lobby the Federal Government
in support of summer camps.

Animal Showcase:
Dogday Cicada
|
|
Cicadas, those loud, big eyed, big winged harbingers of August heat waves, have an amazing lifecycle. When you hear their high-pitched singing that is the male trying to attract a partner. After mating, the female lays her eggs in slits and under the bark of trees. When the nymphs hatch, they drop to the ground, burrow down to the roots of the trees to feed on their sap, and will moult several times. Before their final moult they emerge from the ground and climb trees. Hanging on tight, they then shed their old exoskeleton, and flex their wings as adults. Amazingly, their complete life cycle is three years – egg to adult.
The Dogday Cicada is the most common here in southern Ontario, and it is rightly named, isn’t it!
