HANDING OFF YOUR BUSINESS?

Business owners work hard every day to ensure the success of their operations. But many overlook the necessity of having a succession plan.

A panel of your peers during the 2019 IPPS-ER Annual Conference shared their succession planning experiences. This July and August, our newsletter will feature the unique perspectives of those panelists and we'll share a few additional resources.

Here are a few great resources below.

IPPS-ER NAMES STEPHANIE STOCKTON
NEW EXECUTIVE SECRETARY-TREASURER

The IPPS-ER is pleased to announce the selection of Stephanie Stockton, owner of SMS Meetings & Events, LLC as its new Executive Secretary-Treasurer. The selection was made after a national search and selection process.

“I was impressed with Stephanie's interview and subsequent meetings," said Dr. Winston Dunwell, IPPS-ER President and Selection Committee Chair. "I believe that Stephanie will fit right in with IPPS-ER's culture and has the personality and skills that will complement our mission and programs.”

Stockton has nearly twenty years of experience in association management and meeting planning, which includes serving as Director of Business Education at the American Nursery & Landscape Association. She has also served the Perennial Plant Association, The International Agritourism Association, and other international educational programs.

"The IPPS Eastern Region has an impressive history,” Stockton said. “I am honored to have the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing growth and continued success.”

Stockton joined IPPS-ER on July 1, 2020. Margot Bridgen retired June 30 and is helping with the smooth transition.

SCHOLARSHIP QUANDARY

Recently, Dave Sanford, IPPS-ER Foundation Scholarship Chair and his Committee were in a quandary. There were so many excellent applications for the two available Foundation scholarships of $2,000 each, it didn’t feel right to provide only two, so he suggested to the Foundation Board that they approve awarding three scholarships of $2,000. Everyone liked the idea until Foundation expenses and payouts were evaluated. Since getting to the point in 2019 of being able to start supporting newcomers in horticulture, the Foundation had established a spending limit of four percent. The third scholarship would put the Foundation over that limit. No one spoke in favor of doing that!

But the Foundation’s irrepressible Executive Director, Brian Decker, had a trick up his sleeve. He asked the Board what if he could raise the extra $2,000 for the third scholarship? There was a strong appetite for the idea and so Brian tasked himself with the goal of accomplishing this in 30 days. Those of you who know Brian won’t be surprised to hear it took him less than five days!

We are proud to announce the winners of the 2020 IPPS-ER Foundation Scholarships:
