Big Game Season is Coming Up!

Each year, Outdoor Buddies organizes big game hunts for hunters with all levels of mobility impairment. Participants never pay to participate in these hunts, and they are held on private land on properties throughout the state with the help of volunteer guides. Hunt opportunities are limited, so hunters who apply are randomly drawn to go on hunts. It is truly an incredible experience to enjoy the outdoors together with you!

Outdoor Buddies relies on generous landowners and organizations to provide access to properties to host hunts. We are an all-volunteer organization and not a guide service, so we need volunteers just like you to make these hunts happen! If you know of any new properties that Outdoor Buddies may be interested in, there is always a need to find more places to hunt so we can take more hunters out in the field!

If you were selected for an Outdoor Buddies hunt this year and have received the tag you need from CPW, you will be contacted by our hunt coordinators as the season gets closer.

If you were not successful in drawing your tag from CPW in the primary and secondary draws, there may still be action required on your part. You may need to get your tag through the Colorado mobility impaired big game hunting program.

Mobility impaired hunters in Colorado are eligible for special antlerless tags each year. All permanently mobility impaired hunters are encouraged to sign up here to receive the opportunity to get mobility impaired tags--you only have to fill out this form once and you will receive these tags each summer prior to the season.

Sign Up Now! Shoot From a Vehicle Hunt Prep Event

July 29th, 2023

Highly Encouraged for All Big Game Hunt Participants

Ask anyone who has been on an Outdoor Buddies hunt--it is harder to shoot from a vehicle than you might think! It is one thing to shoot tight groups from a bench rest on the range; it is quite another to line up a successful shot in the field. The position of the vehicle, the use of adaptive equipment, the communication between the helpers and the hunter--it all has to come together to lead to success. We highly encourage both participants and helpers alike to come to this important event to work out your shooting system before that big moment when you are out hunting!

We will be offering an event to give participants the chance to practice shooting from a vehicle at silhouette targets. If you have your own equipment, please bring the rifle and gear you plan to use on your hunt.

Saturday, July 29th

Recipe: Campfire Trout

Recipe by: Katie DeLorenzo

Credit: ediblecommunities.com

The delicate meat of freshly caught trout easily takes on flavor from any spices you add and wood smoke over which you cook it. When gathering wood for the fire, alder, mesquite, and oak are good choices. Avoid resinous wood like pines and juniper because they may impart a turpentine-like flavor to the fish. Once you have an even bed of hot coals, you’re ready to cook.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole trout dressed
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 lemon
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Kosher or truffle salt

Directions

  1. Heat a griddle or cast-iron pan on top of your campfire, or weave a platform out of green willow or mesquite branches. Suspend the wooden platform or griddle cooking device on the rocks comprising the fire ring, about 6 inches above the heat.
  2. A cast iron pan can be set directly on the coals. Coat the dressed fish, inside and out, with olive oil, and place 2 or 3 lemon slices in the cavity. (It is best to keep your trout whole, especially if using a handcrafted platform, so it retains moisture and is more maneuverable.) If possible, slightly tilt the fish belly up to keep moisture in the cavity. Cook time will depend on variables such as fish size, heat intensity, distance from heat, and weather, but 4–8 minutes per side for fish 14 inches or fewer is a good rule of thumb. When the flesh on the bottom side is flaky, it is ready to flip. After cooking both sides, you can easily peel the skin back and pick the meat off one side.
  3. Remove all the bones at once by gently lifting them out in one piece from head to tail. This technique works best if you keep the fish moist and avoid overcooking. Garnish the fish with fresh cracked pepper, kosher or truffle salt, and lemon, and enjoy your fresh-caught meal.
