July 2025

Words from your Houston SCBWI Illustrator Coordinator

I want you to close your eyes right now—unless you're driving, and if you are I want you to stop reading this right now!

Now, with your eyes closed, picture the creative community you always wanted. One that challenged you, supported you, cheered you on, and helped you grow into the writer or illustrator you were always meant to be.

If you already have that community—amazing. Now think back: what would’ve helped you get there faster?

Open your eyes. Honestly, I don't know how you read all those instructions with them closed anyway. But that's what makes you so amazing.

Now that you've pictured your ideal community, here's the invitation: help us build that kind of community right here in Houston.

And it doesn’t take much. Just a couple hours a month can make a real difference.

Got experience? Mentor someone who needs just one hour or two of encouragement each month.

Unpublished but have extra time? Volunteer for an SCBWI role—we’ll match your skills to your Houston chapter's needs.

Just getting started? Show up. Attend events. Ask questions. Say hello. Your presence alone helps this chapter thrive.

Happily in service WITH you,

Annie Harmon

Fuel Your Craft

How does Illustrator Sketch Night work on ZOOM? We enjoy a quick visit and share for the first 10-15 minutes and then it is independent work time. I provide an optional drawing prompt in addition to the SCBWI #DrawThis option if you didn't come with a project of your own. When the timer stops, we share our progress! Just think, all the advantages of a group of creatives doing what creatives do, but without the drive in Houston traffic!

Anyone interested in joining in on a figure drawing session on a Sunday afternoon?

Email me for more information: houston-ic@scbwi.org (low cost and limit of 10 people)

Houston Liftoff!

With the power of community, we are creating stories and illustrations in just 30 minutes! Join us on July 8th for the next community session. Remember, after the 30 minutes, we open the mics to share.

And maybe one of these stories or illustrations will be added to a Houston Lift-Off anthology.

Many thanks to Jill Wegner for the new logo!

How does Marty Chan inspire kids to write during his in-person and virtual school visits?

Last chance to join us! This July 9th, learn how to increase engagement during presentations, like school visits. Learn how to utilize games and illustrate concepts in a way that captures the attention of even the reluctant student.

Let Marty show you how to structure your visit in a way that brings your presentation to life and gets you invited back again and again. Learn how to give them something to remember!

"Marty presented to my class during World Read Aloud Day. It's months later, and the kids are still talking about his presentation!" -Kaye Marc-Charles

FOLK WISDOM & OTHER THOUGHTS

By Jim Smolski

"It is the imperfections in a child's artwork that makes it perfect!"

Unwritten

Words I’ve lost.

Unwritten cost.

Most are not returning.

Those words now gone.

They’re moving on.

I find this quite concerning.

To lose the frown.

I write words down.

Before they are denied me.

The words transferred.

Will now be heard.

This thought I had inside me.

So, each new thought.

That moment caught.

The second I am bitten.

If I don’t do it.

You never view it.

My poem left unwritten….
