Great Teeth Start at Birth!
Sure their baby teeth will fall out...but they are very important for their development, health, ability to learn...their overall life.
Whether they are baby teeth OR permanent teeth, tooth decay left untreated will cause pain and infection that can lead to problems with eating, speaking and especially learning.
Tips for all stages of teeth:

When putting baby down to sleep, only put water in a bottle, never milk, juice or soda. Prior to teeth, wash baby's gums with a damp cool washcloth.

Summer Tips from Potter the Otter
With school out and the weather heating up, we've compiled a few tips to keep your children safe and healthy over the summer:
- Make time for water breaks. When your child is active this summer, remember to have them take breaks often to prevent dehydration. Carry a refillable water bottle so that you and your family have water on the go.
- Don't forget routines during the summer. Try structuring daily routines for your family and children. For example, choose a day of the week or weekend to visit the pool or play at the park. Routines help young children develop a sense of family stability and belonging.
- Keep reading every day! A child's reading ability can decline over the summer when school is not in session. Keep learning all summer long and encourage your child to read 20 minutes every day, either with you, a family member, or on their own if they are able.

Little Free Libraries
Did you know we now have over 25 Little Free Libraries in Amador County?
From Camanche to Buckhorn, from River Pines to Jackson, find one near you.
Little Free Libraries offer a way to share good things to read: books that intrigue, books that teach, books that are fun!
Whose libraries are these?
They belong to everybody: neighbors, friends, people we don't even know yet. Anyone can use them.
That's why we want to take care of them.
Share a book: after you read a book, bring it to any Little Free Library, and bring other books from home too that you would like to share.
Take a book: if you see a book you would like to read, take it, and then bring it back for someone else to read when you're done.
And that's it!

How can you give kids the best start in life?
... by taking your children to well-child and dental check ups and also, by doing an "ASQ."
The Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) is a way to make sure your child is "on track." The screening tools are designed
to be completed by parents or primary caregivers, that encourage parent-caregiver involvement.
Each questionnaire can be completed in 10-20 minutes, and is divided into five areas: Communication, Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Problem Solving, and Personal-Social.
The benefit for all children and families is so that parents/caregivers know which areas they can focus on at home with their children.

Healthy QUICK TIPS of the MONTH

Did you know that cigarettes and tobacco
products make up more than one-third of all collected litter in the US? Not only is litter unsightly, but discarded tobacco and nicotine products are dangerous to children.
THE NATIONAL POISON CONTROL CENTER warns that children can be poisoned by nicotine. Nicotine is found in cigarettes,
e-liquids, cigars, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco, nicotine gum, and nicotine patches.
Nicotine is highly toxic, especially to small children.
Signs and symptoms of nicotine poisoning may include vomiting, sweating, dizziness, increased heart rate, lethargy, and seizures.
The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that liquid
nicotine
used in e.cigarettes can poison a child when
swallowed or absorbed through the skin!
TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM NICOTINE POISONING:
- ALWAYS store cigarettes, e-liquids, and other nicotine products where children cannot see or reach them.
- NEVER discard cigarette butts or other nicotine products on the ground.
- SUPPORT smoke-free and e.cigarette-free open space policies.
If you suspect your child was exposed to nicotine,
call the Poison Control Center hotline:

immediately.

month from the Imagination Library! This is a free program, paid for by First 5 Amador and donations from local individuals and service organizations locally. Books are available to all Amador County children aged 0-4 (from birth until their 5th birthday).
