Visions Museum of Textile Art

July at VMOTA

Dear VMOTA community,

We believe that engaging with textile arts celebrates each individual’s cultural heritage and has the power to connect us through our shared stories. In response to current events affecting immigrants, we have been working on a project to show positive support to our new neighbors. Recognizing that we all have an immigrant story to share, VMOTA is participating in the Welcome Blanket Project. As participants in this project, we invite you to join us for three First Fridays (September, November, and December) to help create a knitted or crocheted blanket and a quilted blanket as a symbol of solidarity and welcome. The final blankets will be responsibly distributed through Helping Empower Community Refugees in El Cajon. Positive messages to blanket recipients by participants will be included with the blankets. This opportunity is free and open to the public; and individuals of all levels of experience are invited. Additional details will be shared on our website as we get closer to our first event.

Thank you for joining us in this community effort to welcome our newest neighbors.

NEW WORKSHOP

Experimentation with Modifiers on Fabrics Dyed with Natural Dyes - July 28, 2025

This class is led by Mildred and Sama Barrios, who run a Mexico-based natural color studio called SUULA. In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of modifying natural color. In the realm of natural dyeing, modifiers involve the partial or total application of substances such as vinegar, iron oxide, and baking soda, among others, to fabric dyed with natural dyes. This process alters the tone of the dye, allowing for a wider variety of colors or the creation of patterns and designs on the fabric. Some dyes react more strongly than others to these modifiers. During the workshop, participants will experiment with pre-dyed fabric samples to explore the technique.

Date: Monday, July 28, 2025

Time: 1pm - 4:30pm

The cost is $100 for VMOTA members and $120 for non-members.

UPCOMING VOLUNTEER TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

Become a Docent!

At VMOTA, our valued docents extend a white-gloved experience to local schools, community organizations, and artists who become future collaborators and advocates of our purpose to celebrate the wonders of textile art. Docents spark dialogue, inspire creative thinking, and celebrate textile art through thoughtfully crafted tours. We are looking to expand our docent team.

Join us on August 5th from 12:30 to 3:30 PM for an exciting docent training opportunity! No experience necessary. To reserve your spot and receive more information, please email info@vmota.org

NEW WORKSHOP

Discover Weaving Inlay On A Transparent Background - August 17-18, 2025

Join us as creative weaving artist Rebecca Smith leads a two-day workshop in the technique of inlay, a process for weaving pictorial and geometric designs on a loom. In this workshop, participants will weave designs simultaneously with the sheer, transparent background or ground cloth. When the finished piece is hung, light travels through the background cloth to frame the design, which remains opaque.

Date: Sunday, August 17 - Monday, August 18, 2025

Time: 9 am - 4 pm with a 1-hour break for lunch each day

The cost is $150 for VMOTA members and $175 for non-members. The class will be limited to 14 participants.

REMINDER: STORYTELLING THROUGH TEXTILES

Current Exhibitions

INTIKA: Men in Textiles

In partnership with Oceanside Museum of Art, VMOTA presents an exhibition that showcases men who work with textile art. Inspired by the island of Taquile, Peru where, for nearly 500 years, men have used textiles as a means of expression. The island's indigenous name “INTIKA” is still used by the locals today and was the inspiration for this exhibit.

We Are Voices of Other Voices/Somos Voces de Otras Voces

Under the direction of Ricardo Pinto and María Saldaña, artisans from Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca partnered with contemporary Mexican artists who do not typically work with textiles to develop a series of pieces exclusively crafted for this exhibition.

Human Affects by Laura Foster Nicholson

Through handwoven textiles, Laura shares about climate change, hope of renewable energy, careful farming, and a less destructive way of life.

Weft and Memory by Denise Lacarra

In the work of Denise Lacarra, painting decomposes and recomposes in a process that challenges its own material limits. Fragments of previously painted canvases are cut, recombined, and sewn together, generating compositions where the visual memory of each stroke overlaps with new configurations.
