Dear Friends,
You may have noticed from our website that CMEE recently joined the "Let's Move - Museums and Gardens Initiative." Started by First Lady, Michelle Obama, the project encourages museums to develop programming and exhibits that help solve the problem of childhood obesity by promoting healthy eating and physical activity.
I'm sure you're aware that in the last 30 years, children are watching more TV, eating larger portions of food, and having less time for recess and physical activity with the result that nearly one in three children in America is overweight or obese. If nothing is done to reduce childhood obesity, one third of children born after 2000 will develop diabetes at some point in their lifetimes. They will also be at much higher risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.
With our mission to promote learning and active play, children's museums are ideal resources in their communities to help combat childhood obesity. Museums that are participating in the Let's Move initiative are asked to report to the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) about their efforts to develop "eat healthy, get active" exhibits and programming that promotes "healthy choices."
I'm eager to hear from you if and how CMEE helps your children get active and healthy. You can express your opinion about encouraging children to get active and eat healthy on CMEE's Facebook page. We'll be reporting back on our efforts in the August issue of CMEE's E-Newsletter.
You can also go to our Facebook page to suggest a name for the tractor at CMEE. Let us know what you think!
I look forward to seeing you soon at CMEE!
Sincerely,
Stephen Long
Executive Director

New! Summer Book Club for Moms!First Meeting July 11!
|
CMEE announces a summer book club especially for moms who are CMEE members! After all, the Museum's mission is to promote learning through play not just for kids, but for the whole family, too! Spearheaded by CMEE Family Fair co-chair and author/writer, Zibby Right, this book club is intended to be a fun, interesting weeknight diversion. While sitting on the beach this July and August, you'll have the opportunity to read four
books (two fiction, two non-fiction) and then discuss them with other CMEE moms over a glass of wine. We've selected a mix of hilarious and poignant parenting memoirs and fiction. The CMEE Moms Book Club meets every couple of weeks in July and August at 8:00 pm. (Note: finishing these books on time isn't intended to be stressful. If you can't finish every word or you've already read them, you're still welcome to attend.) Join us for as many of the meetings as you like at the homes of other moms in the East End. (Details provided after you RSVP.) More dates/books may be added.

Candy on the walls?
Only if it's WallCandy Arts! |

The next time you visit CMEE, be sure to take a walk down our classroom corridor! You'll notice a garden and a forest have grown - on the walls! The installation of wall decals was donated by Allison Krongard owner of WallCandy Arts - a company that designs and manufactures modern peel and decorating kids for the wall. Allison, an East Hampton mother of two and her husband, conceived of WallCandy Arts ten years ago, and their idea clearly stuck! The decals are easily removable and reusable, non-toxic, lead-free, plus VOC free and made in the U.S. |

Exhibit Enhancements at CMEE
|
Thanks to all of our supporters who helped make CMEE's Refresh and Refurbish effort possible, the Museum updated several exhibitions in May and June. In the Windmill, CMEE added a new "Wind Blowers" installation where children can push a button and use long air tubes to make a series of colorful pinwheels spin and turn just like a windmill.

To help promote pretend play by sailors and pirates at the Museum, CMEE has transformed the "hold" of the Ship. In addition to pretending to navigate and steer the ship, pretend sailors can now work among the cargo and take a nap in the berth.
During meetings with children about what to add to CMEE, they asked for more "secret spaces" in the Museum. In response, CMEE has created a "flashlight fort" in the Snag Tree for children to explore.

Congratulations Graduates!
|
CMEE congratulates its first class of preschoolers from LI Head Start, who graduated last week. During the graduation ceremonies, Head Teacher, Raquel Barnes presented each student with a diploma while they were photographed by proud parents.

Children sang several songs during the ceremony including "CMEE and Head Start Go Together," lyrics written by Ms. Barnes and fellow teacher, Dave Davis to the tune of the "Wheels on the Bus."
Here's a sampling:
"Head Start and CMEE go together, go together, go together.
Head Start and CMEE go together, all day long.
The ice cream in the shop is yummy, yummy, yummy...
The bells on the fire truck go clang, clang, clang...
The pirates on the ship go argh, argh, argh...
...all day long!
To conclude the graduation exercises, children, parents, and teachers performed the "Hokey Pokey." CMEE Executive Director Steve Long congratulated parents and teachers for instilling such enormous enthusiasm for school among the children. CMEE wishes the graduates all the best as they embark on kindergarten next year! We look forward to welcome a new class of Head Start preschoolers in September. |
