CHGM's Community Engagement Makes a Real Difference

Jane may have saved a life because of what she learned from Capitol Hill Group Ministry (CHGM).

On her way home from work one day, Jane encountered a homeless man sleeping near a storefront. It was 97 degrees outside and the man was lying on the hot pavement, directly in the sun. Because Jane had recently attended one of CHGM's new Community Nights and participated in our "Outreach Friends" training, she knew that DC's hot summers can be deadly for our vulnerable homeless neighbors.

Thankfully, because of CHGM's training, Jane also knew exactly what to do. She gently woke the man and asked if he was OK. Finding that he was unable to get up and had no water, Jane knew the man was in danger. She had someone call DC's Hyperthermia Hotline and an aid worker in a van arrived within minutes to tend to the gentleman's needs.

We cannot know for sure what would have happened to this man had CHGM's training not inspired Jane to check on him or taught her how to help. But with at least one suspected death of a homeless man due to hyperthermia already, we will continue to do everything we can to care for our homeless friends this summer, and to enlist your help in doing so.

Please help us today by making a generous tax-deductible donation to fund our Street Outreach Program and the full range of CHGM's homeless services. Without your support we could not offer learning opportunities like the one Jane attended. Your contributions will ensure that we can continue to educate and empower caring people like Jane--and like you--to both help individual homeless neighbors directly, and to advocate for long-term solutions to homelessness in DC. Thank you!!

Annual Back to School Backpack Drive is Underway!

Each year as summer draws to a close, children across the country look forward to a new school year and all the excitement it brings: new classes, reuniting with friends, and participating in favorite extra-curricular activities. For some of these children and their families, however, it is also a stressful time as moms and dads struggle to provide students with the long list of school supplies they are expected to purchase.

Each year, CHGM helps to relieve this anxiety and financial burden, and to situate children for academic success. Our Backpack Drive provides low-income families with backpacks full of all the supplies their children will need for the school year.

In 2013, CHGM provided 296 children with backpacks. Here's how you can help us serve even more students this year: 1) make a cash donation towards school supplies, 2) sponsor backpacks for one or more children, or 3) contribute new in-kind items.

If you would like to become a backpack sponsor, please contact Shelah Wilcox at (202) 544-3150 or at and indicate how many children you would like to sponsor and any preference for grade or gender. You will be provided with a list of required school supplies for each child and can drop off backpacks filled with those supplies at Shirley's Place Day Center, located at 1338 G St. SE, anytime Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, between August 4th and August 14th. Thank you!!

Mr. Henry's Fundraiser Brings Capitol Hill Together

The Capitol Hill community wined and dined for a great cause at the popular Mr. Henry's Restaurant on July 9th. Mr. Henry's graciously hosted a fundraiser to support our homeless neighbors by donating 20% of their proceeds to Capitol Hill Group Ministry.

Open since 1966, Mr. Henry's is a Capitol Hill tradition. With its famous burgers and low-key atmosphere, Mr. Henry's was the perfect setting for supporters of CHGM to come together and enjoy delicious meals and great company. The restaurant was booming with a full house from early evening until closing.

CHGM sincerely thanks Mr. Henry's for hosting the fundraiser.  From management to wait staff, the entire Mr. Henry's team was incredibly supportive. We are grateful for their hospitality and their generous donation.

We also extend our gratitude to all of you who came out to dine with us that night. We enjoyed your company and hope you enjoyed your food and drink all the more, knowing a portion of your bill would be be donated to CHGM in support of direct services to our neighbors in need. Thank you!
