Annual Back-to-School Backpack Drive Underway

running-backpack-children.jpg

It is hard to believe that July is coming to an end, but summer is flying by and back-to-school season is nearly upon us. This means it is time for CHGM's annual backpack drive.

Each year CHGM helps to relieve many families' anxiety about the financial burden of purchasing the long list of required school supplies by providing low-income families with backpacks full of all the items their children will need for the year ahead.

Last year, CHGM distributed nearly 300 backpacks to students of all ages, and we're hoping to support hundreds again this year. It's not too late to help! You can support our backpack drive by making a cash donation, sponsoring backpacks for one or more children, or contributing new in-kind items.

To become a sponsor, please contact Shelah Wilcox at 202-544-3150 or wilcox@chgm.net before August 13th with a preference for grade, gender and number of children you would like to sponsor. From there, you will receive all of the information you need to support this important cause. Monetary donations can be made via our donations page or by check to CHGM, 421 Seward Square SE, Washington, DC 20003. Thank you!

Young Adult Volunteer Says Goodbye

CHGM partnered with the Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church (CHPC) to host its first Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) over the past year. The YAV program, through the Presbyterian Mission Agency, places young adults with local community agencies and churches for a year of service. Emily Powers spent her year as both a Community Outreach Coordinator with CHGM and a Programming Assistant with CHPC's Washington Seminar Center. CHGM has been fortunate to have Emily's help expanding our outreach and volunteer programming. Below is a goodbye note in her own words.

Dear CHGM friends and neighbors,

This past year has been filled with a plethora of unique experiences. The opportunity to work on the engagement team, and build relationships with our neighbors experiencing homelessness has taught me a lot. I'm glad I also spent time this year working with our partners. Everyone has taught me that there is so much we can do together. Thank you for the opportunity to know you all and learn from each of you, including our staff, our board, our dedicated volunteers, and our neighbors experiencing homelessness. I know that my experience from this past year will continue to shape me as I start my ministry. Thank you.

Best,
Emily

CHGM wishes Emily the best of luck as she moves on to a new challenge, and thanks CHPC for sharing her with us. We can't wait to continue our partnership when we get our second YAV this September!

CHGM Annual Golf Tournament: We Need Volunteers!

CHGM's 13th Annual "Hope for the Homeless" Golf Tournament is right around the corner, and you can help! Sign up to volunteer at the event and help us with registration, raffle ticket sales, skills contests, or one of the many other jobs necessary to ensure that the event runs smoothly and everyone has a great time.

The tournament will take place on September 21st at Glenn Dale Golf Club. Proceeds from sponsorships and ticket sales enable CHGM to provide comprehensive services to homeless and at-risk individuals and families on Capitol Hill and across the District of Columbia.

For more information about becoming a volunteer, or general information about the golf tournament, contact Karen Cunningham at cunningham@chgm.net. We'll see you there!
