August 7 - Primary Election Day 2018
Select the candidates you want to support in November. You will need to request a Democratic Party Ballot. The contested seats in the Democratic Primary are for Missouri's United States Senate seat held by Claire McCaskill and Missouri's 6th Congressional District.

Also on the August 7th ballot is the anti-union Right-to-Work (for less) Proposition A. Vote NO! Many of you signed initiative petitions to get this on the ballot. Now is the time to make your voices heard.
Platte County Democratic Election Headquarters - NOW OPEN!
The Platte County Democratic Election Headquarters is now open. Field representatives from Claire McCaskill's Coordinated campaign are Adam LaBrie and Kevin Triue (pronounced "true"). The office is located at 6732 Tower Drive in Platte Woods. The phone number is: 816-592-3276.
A Grand Opening will be scheduled in the near future.

Turn Here
A Strategy Session with senior members of Claire McCaskill's staff is planned for Tuesday July 24th at 7:00 p.m. Yard signs will be available by then. Come listen to see if you want to volunteer to canvas or make calls and other tasks.

Still needed are folding chairs (be sure to label). Also needed are tables (be sure your name is on a label), toaster, air fresheners, speakers (or boom box).  Ongoing during the campaign they will need water, soft drinks, and snacks.  The PCFWDC may hold it's August meeting at HQ.

We will be making plans for a Platte County desk to provide information about our Platte County Candidates and work with the Coordinated Campaign to elect a full slate of Democrats in Jefferson City and Washington D.C. We will be looking for volunteers to make phone calls and canvass. We also plan to help address post cards, work on a social media campaign, produce a calendar of fundraisers and special events for our candidates, organize a regular letter to the editor campaign (picking a topic each week to send to local papers and the Kansas City Star). We are looking for creative ideas to help us reach out and involve your friends and neighbors. We want to build a larger community of Democrats in Platte County. This may be the most important election in our lifetimes.

Platte County Federated Women's Democratic Club
The Women's Club met on July 9th at the Platte County Resource Center. The program featured attorneys Andrea Martinez and Megan Galicia who told the story of a local immigration deportation drama. It began when a pregnant young woman Kenia was arrested after a traffic stop. She was a passenger but she missed an immigration hearing so she was arrested. This was several months ago. Her significant other, Luis and her 3 year old son Noah went back to Texas.

Attorneys Martinez and Galicia had made arrangements for Luis and Noah to meet at the ICE facility in Platte County so Noah could go with his mother Kenia when she was to be deported to Honduras. Luis who is also an undocumented immigrant was assured that he could bring the Noah to meet his mother without fear of being arrested. When they arrived, however, the ICE agents there were problems. The following videos show events that took place that night and a protest that followed. Also attached is a link to an article by Mary Sanchez that tells the story.

The Platte County Democratic Central Committee met on June 21 at the Platte County Resource Center.

Guest Renee Hoagenson spoke about her campaign to unseat Vicky Hartzler in Missouri's 4 th Congressional District. She was born and raised in Missouri to a family of farmers and ranchers in St. Clair, Missouri.  She moved to the Missouri 4 th at age 6, went to MU, and currently has children who attend MU.  She is a small business owner in advertising and publishing. She had a small business in Sedalia in '09 during the financial crisis and knows first-hand what it was like to experience a lot of financial insecurity.   She cares about people facing food insecurity and believes the current representative makes it harder for these people. She will fight against legislation that throws people off healthcare. She believes we need to get chaos out of congress and work for the 99%. She cares about campaign finance reform, lobbyist reform, district reform, and fixing the foundation for families.  She believes that everyone who works 40 hours per week should be able to provide for their family and wants to make sure Main Street is healthy. She wants to ensure that every child has a quality education including our rural schools. She wants to ensure that every person has basic healthcare which she believes could be accomplished by lowering the age to get on Medicare. She has already raised $200,000 from 2,300 different donors.  Her opponent only has received 5% of her funds from small donations while Renee has received 100% of her funds from small donations. She has three union endorsements and has already done 15 town halls.

Democratic Candidates and Ballot Issues

With Election Season 2018 underway Platte County has excellent candidates running for every Statewide and State Legislative office. In the weeks and months to come there will be regular candidate fund raisers and opportunities to meet candidates at venues large and small. Liking our candidate's Facebook pages is an excellent way to keep in touch with what is happening and where. It is also one of the most economical ways for candidates to reach you. We need everyone to participate in any way they can. Talk to your friends and neighbors, help us knock on doors, make phone calls, address post cards. Hold a neighborhood meeting to meet your local candidate and discuss pressing issues. Join us in writing letters to the editor on important issues.
