Father Tom's Message

The diocese is now receiving reopening proposals from congregations in counties where COVID-19 cases have been declining or flat for fourteen days. Washoe County does not currently meet this criterion. The Vestry is monitoring the matter and will be exploring next steps. Meanwhile, we continue offering worship and activities such as the Book Group via Zoom, and activities such as the Hiking Group in-person. We also encourage everyone to continue following safe practices.

We are pleased that our new Jump Start Kitchen slow-cooker ministry, in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada and the Community Food Pantry in Sparks, is progressing nicely. Please see the article in this newsletter by Kris McCain and Beth Osborne to find out more about how you can support or participate in this ministry.

We continue our support for Nevadans for the Common Good (NCG) in Northern Nevada. We will welcome the Rev'd Deacon Veronica Galas as preacher on Sunday, 2 August 2020, on behalf of the organization. Please also mark your calendars for the next NCG general meeting on Tuesday, 25 August 2020 at 4:30 pm (most likely via Zoom). Anyone who is not already on the NCG email list and would like to be, please let me know.

We will be resuming our discernment of the viability of a NETworX USA site in the Reno area. Kevin Goss and I plan to meet with representatives of the Capital City C.I.R.C.L.E.S Initiative this month as we had planned to do earlier in the year before the COVID-19 crisis escalated. Stay tuned for more information.

We continue to offer the Daily Digest as a resource. It includes announcements, contact information, churchwide links, and devotional resources. If you are not receiving the Daily Digest, or know anyone who would like to be added to the email list, please let me know at thomas@stcatherinesreno.org.

St. Catherine's has applied for and received two loans associated with federal relief due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Since we haven't been able to meet at St. Catherine's due to Covid-19, these loan funds will be used to help St. Catherine's cover qualified salary and rent expenses.  

These loans should qualify to be converted to grants once we file the appropriate paperwork.

We are hoping that these funds will help us to reduce our projected budget deficit for 2020.

Mission under way, here's how to help

After a month of partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada and the Community Food Pantry, St. Catherine's new Jump Start Kitchen Ministry is running smoothly.  We have received numerous positive comments from the 15 families who have been the recipients of our slow cookers and first three recipes/ingredients.  All are extremely grateful for the healthy food options, the ease of use, and the kid-friendly recipes.  We are providing recipes and their ingredients to 15 families every other week, and are now asking parishioners to sign up for a Wednesday to sponsor a meal going forward.

The following steps detail what an interested participant should expect:
  1. Please contact parishioner Kris McCain at kmccain59@gmail.com or 615-483-4678 to schedule a date and receive potential recipes to choose from (or choose your own).
  2. Once a recipe is selected, please email a copy of the recipe to Beth Osborne at bosborne@bbbsnn.org.  She will have it translated and pass it along to The Community Food Pantry for them to check on which ingredients they are able to provide.  
  3. By the Friday prior to your selected date (or sooner), Beth will let you know which ingredients will be available at the Food Pantry that week.  You will be responsible for purchasing the remaining ingredients for 15 families. Please keep all receipts to turn into St. Catherine's for reimbursement.  It is important that we document all expenditures.  If you wish to donate, please do so separately, by writing a check to St. Catherine's and noting that it is for the Jump Start Kitchen ministry.   
  4. Certain ingredients like spices may be able to be purchased in bulk and broken down into smaller sizes according to the recipe.  Feel free to contact Kris with any questions. 
  5. Plan to meet Beth at the Community Food Pantry at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1135 12th Street, Sparks at 5:00 PM on your scheduled Wednesday, with all of the ingredients you have purchased.  She will help you unload your purchases into the Food Pantry where you will have a long table to divide all ingredients, including those supplied by the Pantry, into 15 individual bags. Once the bags are complete, you will load them back into your vehicle and follow Beth to the library parking lot next door, where Beth's staff from Big Brothers Big Sisters will be waiting to transfer the bags into their vehicles for distribution to the families.  
  6. Turn in your receipts to St. Catherine's for reimbursement.

Greetings!  The vestry is hoping to make St. Catherine's a more allergy-friendly space.

I, Kris McCain, am very sensitive to scent so I have requested unscented soap and cleaning supplies. I know a number of parishioners have food allergies or sensitivities. We would like your input. 

What are your allergies or sensitivities? Would it be helpful to have an ingredient list on the foods we serve at coffee hour and fellowship dinners?

Walking group meets again to hike July 11

The St. Catherine's walking group will meet for a morning hike on Saturday, July 11.

Meet at Starbucks in the Raley's center on Mt. Rose Highway at 9 a.m., and we will caravan to the trailhead.

All walking abilities are welcome, and dogs too! Bring water and a light snack.
Book Club to meet up outdoors on July 14

Hello, all.  Another month of Covid-19, and by God's grace we are still here.  That reminds me that God's grace comes by the minute, hour, day; that is how we live, not in the future.  

We plan to have the July and August book club meetings available via Zoom and in person, if you feel you want to venture out.  We will meet outside and keep social distance.

Thanks to Liz for hosting the meeting last month.  I will host the next meeting  July 14, 10:30 a.m. at my house (10060 Zephyr Heights Dr.)   

We are reading All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes by Maya Angelou.  This is an amazing account of Maya's experiences in Guana, Africa.  

Please come if you wish, and bring a snack. I will provide drinks.  Father Tom will provide Zoom access if you wish to join us that way.  Take care, I miss you all.

Every three years the United Thank Offering assembles a book of prayers. This small book is one of the most popular items UTO gives out at the General Convention/Triennial. These prayers are from people throughout the Episcopal Church, in the following categories: Gratitude, Guidance, Healing, Love of God & Creation, Sorrow or Fear, Prayers for Morning, Prayers for Midday, Prayers for Night, and Other.
