Prince George County Clean Water Farm Award Winner

C.W. Clements Family Farm

Calvin and his family have been farming in the Spring Grove area of Prince George for multiple generations and continue to introduce new soil & water conservation practices and sustainable crop management techniques on their land. Calvin farms roughly 1,200 acres of row crops in a rotation of corn, soybeans, peanuts, and wheat. He utilizes best management practices such as cover crops, no-till planting, enhanced nutrient management, and various other conservation management strategies on an annual basis.

Chesterfield County Clean Water Farm Award Winner

James "Marvin" Schenck, Jr

Mr. Schenck farms roughly 700 acres in Chesterfield and Amelia counties in a rotation of corn, soybeans, and wheat. He utilizes various best management practices related to his operation, including continuous no-till planting, cover crops, enhanced nutrient management, and timely bio-solids applications. Mr. Schenck sows an early cover crop on all his acres and rotates the species and variety between wheat/small grains, rye, and radish mixtures.

Associate Director Spotlight

Jacqueline Gooden Seay

Following Cave Week, June 1st through June 7th, we are honored to highlight the work of our own Jacqueline Gooden Seay. As an Associate Director for JRSWCD, Virginia Cave Board Member, and adjunct geology professor at Reynolds Community College, Jacqueline perfectly connects our mission of conservation to the hidden world beneath our feet.

During this year's Cave Week, Jacqueline led her geology students through an in-depth exploration of Virginia's caverns. Her curriculum emphasized identifying rock types for cave development, understanding cavern formation chemistry, and linking Virginia's geological provinces to these natural wonders. They also investigated the ecological significance and preservation of these unique underground environments.

Success Stories:

Brandermill Homeowners Association

Brandermill Community Association reached out to our team at JRSWCD in December 2023 after noticing sediment washout into Swift Creek Reservoir. Conservation Technician, Anne Devine, guided the community leaders through the Virginia Conservation Assistance Program, through which they were awarded funding for a large conservation landscaping practice at one of the community’s public parks. This project spans 10,500 sq. ft. and consists of 1360 plants (26 trees, 84 shrubs, 550 perennials, and 700 grasses).
