OUR TRAVEL JOURNAL
Exploring the Emerald Island
with Brendan Vacations
by Lila Shimizu
I traveled with Brendan Vacations on a Guided tour with some locally hosted experiences added to it. It was a nice combination to see a smaller area like Dublin and then explore the country of Ireland.

Dublin is a great walking city, it is best not to have a car in the city. The private passenger vehicles are only allowed in the city center during certain times, leaving public transportation to have full access. The trip started off by meeting my local host, George. He is a retired driver and tour director. We chatted in the hotel lobby, where he reviewed my Dublin itinerary with me, gave me insight into the city and answered any questions I had. This helped give me the security and confidence to navigate the city on my own.

Besides plenty of free time, I had a hop-on/hop-off bus pass, which is a great way to get your bearings in the city. I also scheduled a private car and driver half day tour of Newgrange.
Newgrange is a passage tomb that dates back to the Stone Age. It is said to be older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza! During the Winter Solstice the sun lines up with a roof-box above the entry, and it slowly extends to the rear of the chamber lighting the whole room. Some of the locals I had met hadn’t even been here before.

I felt like I learned a lot more about the destination by having George and a driver with me. They were able to give different commentary on what we saw. George provided me with facts and highlights, and my driver was able to offer more local insight.

EXPLORE THE MEKONG RIVER
ABOARD THE AMADARA
One of the best things about this trip was getting to spend so much time with Beverly (we had not seen each other in 5 years). I enjoyed meeting and learning about their life and culture. I selected this itinerary because I love river cruising and I have longed to go to Vietnam for about 20 years. It was on my bucket list. I felt like I would get to see the highlights of the 2 countries with this itinerary and I did.

The must-see highlights for me were the markets in Saigon, Hanoi, Seam Reap, and the local villages we visited; Angkor Archaeological Park, the water puppet show, and an overnight stay aboard a ship on Ha Long Bay. You must experience an ox-cart ride, a trishaw ride and a rickshaw ride (cyclo).

I would definitely recommend both the pre/post cruise packages. The hotels were luxurious, and we had interesting tours that we could choose. I could not believe the price was so reasonable after seeing the hostels and the tours offered.
This was my 5th AmaWaterways River Cruise, and the AmaDara is by far the most luxurious of the ships I have been on. It was built in Vietnam and the woodwork and Oriental decor are fabulous. The service was over the top.

Denmark, officially the Kingdom of Denmark, is a Nordic country and the southernmost of the Scandinavian nations.
On the Fourth of July in Denmark, drums roll and horns sound to the beat of "Stars and Stripes Forever," the breezes carrying the noise to picnicking families on the hills of Rebild.
For 77 years, except during two World Wars, this small Scandinavian country of 5 million people has celebrated the birthday of the United States at Rebild, the country's only national park, and in Alborg, a city 15 miles from the park.

Quebec City, Canada

Auberge Saint-Antoine is located in Québec City in the heart of Canada’s richest historical district, a UNESCO world heritage site. Perched on the shores of the St. Lawrence River and a stone’s throw from Musée de la civilization, the Auberge is just steps away from Place Royale. It is the perfect home base for exploring romantic, historical Québec City. Built on one of Québec City’s richest archaeological sites, the Auberge is made up of 3 historical buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as a wharf and battery structure that date back to the end of the 17th century. Hundreds of artifacts from both the French and English regimes were discovered during an extensive archaeological dig on the property. In this unique contemporary space, the past has been audaciously re-interpreted for you to savour.

The expression “yachting” is not only a statement about size; it describes a lifestyle aboard the intimate vessels.
