This month, our discussion will begin with the ways in which our muscles can protect our brain, followed by a discussion on cardiovascular disease. As it is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, it is deserving of our attention. Prevention of this disease is a priority in our practice, and we will delve into one of the most important current methods for preventing cardiovascular events. Lastly, many of us begin our day with a cup of coffee, which makes us feel more alert and focused. Is it solely the caffeine, or is there something else at play?

I have some exciting news to share - our team is growing! We'll be moving our location just a couple of blocks away and we are bringing on a new physician to join us. Stay tuned for further details. And if you happen to be on our waiting list, we'll be reaching out to you shortly!

Muscle Protects Brain
Currently, there are no reliable treatments for Alzheimer's disease, which means our best approach is to focus on prevention. Approximately one-third of individuals with Alzheimer's disease have risk factors that can be modified, such as obesity, inflammation, insulin resistance, and elevated levels of amyloid B in fat tissue. As a result, we must question if increasing lean mass can reduce our risk and whether exercise can offer protection, and what type of exercise offers protection. This study examines the links between these factors to determine if higher lean mass can help prevent Alzheimer's disease

Statin Prevention
The ideal time to address heart disease is before it becomes an issue. While our healthcare system is effective at preventing subsequent heart attacks, it's not as proactive in preventing the first one. Statins are commonly prescribed to treat high cholesterol and prevent heart attacks. It's important to know how much plaque they can reduce, and which types of plaque are hazardous.

Coffee vs Caffeine

A lot of people depend on a cup of coffee to begin their day, as it aids in making them more alert and productive. We commonly associate this with the caffeine it contains, but is caffeine the only element that contributes to improved cognitive function and work productivity? Or is there another factor involved?
