Digital Skills in Pennsylvania

The National Skills Coalition has released more than a dozen new state fact sheets on digital skills, and information on Pennsylvania is among them. Please see the two-page fact sheet called Closing Pennsylvania's Digital Skill Divide and use the information, charts, and graphs as part of your own presentations, grant proposals, or as you educate others about the importance of digital skills. The data in these fact sheets is drawn from the 2023 report Closing the Digital Skills Divide and the 2020 report The New Landscape of Digital Literacy.

Encouraging Deep Level Learning Through Discussion

Research shows that the maximum amount of truly high-quality classroom discussions is around two minutes per day. A recent Edutopia article, Improving High School Classroom Discourse, shares strategies that can also be used in the adult education classroom for encouraging discussion. The author defines deep level learning as "the type of learning where students analyze, synthesize, and evaluate core content." Twelve strategies are offered in the categories of discussion starters, tasks for digging deeper, and extending deep conversations.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

IDEAL’s Free Digital Education for Adult Learners Conference

IDEAL’s Edtech Innovations Conference on Thursday, August 22, from 12:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. will help participants deepen their knowledge about digital education for adult learners. Throughout the half-day event, participants can choose to attend lightning talks or participate in an EdTech Maker Space focused on Generative AI. There will be opportunities for engaging with subject matter experts and your peers from across the U.S. Anyone in adult education in PA is welcome to attend this free mini-conference. Register for the conference or learn more about the sessions online.

Webinar: Overview of the Naturalization Test

The LINCS Universal TA webinar, Natz 101: An Overview of the Naturalization Test, is on Wednesday, July 31, 3:00-4:30 p.m. Education program specialists from the USCIS Office of Citizenship will provide an overview of the parts of the U.S. Naturalization Test to inform state directors and adult educators on how they can support immigrant and refugee adult learners who aim to become U.S. citizens.

Webinar: Enhancing Skills and Support for Serving Veterans

Workforce GPS will host a free webinar on Thursday, August 22, 2:00-3:30 p.m., titled Enhancing Skills for Service Veterans 2024. Participants will learn about the various roles American Job Center and public workforce system staff play in serving veterans as discussed in Veterans’ Program Letter No. 05-24, Jobs for Veterans State Grants Staff Roles and Responsibilities and Coordination with Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Services to Veterans. They will gain a refresher on services available to veterans through WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act), Wagner-Peyser, and Jobs for Veterans State Grants (JVSG) programs. Finally, participants will learn about professional development opportunities and resources available through the National Veterans’ Training Institute (NVTI) to improve service delivery to veterans. Professional Learning for Adult Education and Family Literacy Staff

Staff at PDE-funded adult education and family literacy agencies can view a list of upcoming courses now available for enrollment in the PD Portal. For more information about any of these courses, please visit the PD Portal, open the course catalog, and review the syllabus. If you are interested in enrolling in a course, please consult with your in-house professional development specialist (IHPDS) to determine if the course meets your professional learning goals.

Reentry Resources and Best Practices for Working with Offenders

The Reentry Resources and Best Practices for Working with Offenders course will be offered twice (fall and spring) during the 2024-25 PY. During October 2024, the course will be offered virtually with live webinars occurring from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on 10/10, 10/17, and 10/24. Programs are encouraged to invite PA CareerLink and community partner staff to participate in this training with adult education staff. You can NOT register for this course in the PD Portal. If you are interested in learning more about this course, please email Chrissie Klinger at cok5111@psu.edu. Chrissie will email the fall syllabus and team registration details to anyone that is interested in the course. Adult education programs are encouraged to share the syllabus and other course information with partners to form a team that can participate in the training together; however, individuals can participate if you are unable to form a local team.

FAFSA Completion Summer Outreach Campaign

The U.S. Department of Education is holding a drive to support student completion of the 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Your agency is invited to encourage students to complete the FAFSA in time to receive financial aid for this fall. There are promotional resources available. Consider conducting a FAFSA completion event or other methods to help your students.

Webinar: National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week

Once a year the entire field of adult education comes together to raise visibility about all the great work that is taking place at the local, state, and national level. COABE has developed a calendar of activities, resources, and so much more! Teachers, administrators, adult learners, state associations, and partners are invited to register for the AEFL Week Preparation Webinar for tools, strategies, and free resources to help you make the case for you, your learners, and your local program. The webinar will be August 1 at 2:00 p.m. Register online.
