Female Captain Instructs at First-Ever Fire-Up Bootcamp
The Gaston Fire District hosted the first-of-its-kind Fire-Up Bootcamp on July 21-22, an all-female firefighting camp.

There are other female firefighting camps that exist in the area, but they are made up of teenagers or geared towards younger girls. The Fire-Up Bootcamp is the area’s first for women 18 and over, and for those who are either interested in joining the fire service or volunteering or are early in their careers within the fire service.

Although the camp was held at Gaston Fire District, Forest Grove Fire and Rescue and Cornelius Fire Department were additional hosts. Hillsboro Fire and Rescue and Clackamas Fire’s very own, Captain Melanie Kinne provided instructors. Instructors were either local or from out-of-the-area fire departments from as far away as Tacoma, WA and Los Angeles, CA.

The two-day bootcamp led women through firefighting drills like gearing up, raising ladders, deploying hoses and extinguishing live fires.

June Fire Investigations
Date:  6/4/2019 11:53:27 AM
Address: 7200 SE Lamphier St., Milwaukie, OR 97222
Investigator(s):  Stenhouse
Type of Fire: Building Fire
Fire Area of Origin:  Other
Fire Cause:  Unintentional
Estimated Dollar Loss:  $500
Investigator Narrative: The fire occurred in the shooting range near the floor and involved the wall covering materials in a small area. There was a video that showed an individual using lane no. 9 and firing down the range for approximately 45 minutes. The video showed the fire originated at floor-level, developed into a four to five foot tall fire and diminish in size. The camera captured a flame front at the ceiling level for a brief time. With this information, it was theorized the fire was caused by normal shooting operations when hot bullet fragments landed in close proximity to available fuels (firtex) to create a smoldering fire.

Fire Area of Origin:  Railroad right of way: on or near
Fire Cause:  Cause undetermined after investigation
Estimated Dollar Loss:  $1,000
Investigator Narrative: I approached a pile of approximately 50 railroad ties, which had been extinguished by the crews with foam and was still smoldering. Due to a lack of any ignition sources present and the extensive damage caused by the fire, the cause of the fire was undetermined. The area of origin was the pile of railroad ties approximately 30 feet east of the railroad tracks, near the intersection of SE Hwy 212 and SE 82nd Drive. The cause of this fire has been ruled undetermined and was closed pending any new information.
