it’s not the years in your life that count.
It’s the life in your years."

At 29, I Wasn't Prepared to Be a Caregiver

Life Had Other Plans

By Jacquelyn Revere
I was on the subway headed to a friend’s comedy show on the Lower East Side when I received a call that changed every plan I had for myself. I answered and stepped off the train, and from that moment on, everything moved like lightning. Sarah Gonzales For The Times
Within a couple of days, I was home, back in Los Angeles. My mother’s and grandmother’s need for my care was so sudden and so vast that I didn’t comprehend that the move would be permanent.

At the time, I lived in New York City. My goal was to become a late-night TV writer. I had decided to take a stab at stand-up comedy to improve my speaking skills. As a person who stutters, I thought public speaking was my greatest fear. It wasn’t.

Leadership Pipeline Challenge
OPICA Comes Out On Top!
Lori Erickson, VP of Casting at CBS Studios created an initiative called the CBS Leadership Pipeline Challenge with the goal of empowering early-career storytellers to step into creative leadership positions. They are now in year-two of the challenge.

The project creates a short film for the benefit of a local nonprofit; the content of the short film must align with the mission of the nonprofit and be narrative fiction (not a commercial, PSA or music video). A panel of entertainment industry judges score the films to determine which nonprofits win donations, and the nonprofit owns the film at the end of the experience.

The five non-profits in this year's Pipeline Challenge are FEAST, Friends of the LA River, My Friend’s Place, Painted Brain and OPICA. The participants’ short films were inspired by their missions.

OPICA is very excited to have been voted 1st place!!!

The amazing OPICA Team of filmmakers are: Daryn Wakasa, Durand Williams, Rosa Navarrete, Deborah Alvarez, Oscar Loreto Jr., and Ada Rannels. Thank you to all of you.
