RIF of NOVA is joining with Carlin Springs Elementary School for its summer Popsicles in the Park program -- as part of NOVA RIF's 50th Birthday Book Bash series. Special thanks to Carlin Springs librarian and NOVA RIF liaison Holly Nisco and Community School Coordinator Carol Sabatino for partnering together for this novel (get it?!) way to provide books for children over the summer. On hand for the July 6 Popsicles event were Instructional Assistant Diane Garretson and book readers Caroline Peterson, Launa Hall, and Kate Olden who read stories to the kids. All Bash books have been donated by you, our RIF of NOVA community! Bash event photos may be found below and by clicking here.
Many many people and organizations have helped RIF of NOVA during its 50 years. Fifty of our luminaries were identified and celebrated in early June. Shown in the photo are NOVA RIF president Justina Johnson (l) and recording secretary and awards chair Liz Promen with a poster of our Galaxy of Stars.

A full list of our 50 "stars" can be found by clicking here. We are so grateful for the many contributions of those who have made books "happen" for children in our community!

As RIF of NOVA celebrates 50 years in 2022, we are hearing from our community of supporters!

"Following the brunt of the pandemic, we are seeing that children are still in need of high-quality, authentic literature. Scholastic is proud of the partnership it has developed and continues to cultivate with RIF of NOVA. RIF of NOVA has been working to get books into students’ hands for the past 50 years, and we at Scholastic look forward to growing and cultivating that relationship for the next 50 years to come in order to benefit those who both organizations serve each and every day – the children! Here’s to a great partnership and the next 50 years!"

-- Gina Kuchta, Senior Account Executive, Scholastic – VA/DC
"We are thankful and proud to be a longtime partner with NOVA RIF. Children need to have access to high-quality books during their early childhood education to promote a love of learning, vital literacy development, and family engagement. RIF of NOVA allows our students to build a home library to bridge the partnership between home and school while also preparing students for kindergarten. We congratulate RIF of NOVA on its 50th anniversary of meaningful community impact and continuing to partner with organizations like ours to provide children with a strong foundation for their educational journey."

-- Hallye Smith, Executive Director, Falls Church McLean Children's Center

What WAS happening in the children's book world in 1972 when RIF of NOVA began? On a special page on our website, we are counting backward from January through December to reach the top-selling book of 1972.

Number 6 on the list is: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. The Herdman kids lie, steal, cuss their teachers, and smoke cigars. So no one is prepared when they storm Sunday school and take over the annual Christmas pageant. How the Herdmans turn a series of disasters into what everyone agrees is the best Christmas pageant ever, is a hilarious, touching, and unforgettable tale that has been readapted as a stage play and a television movie.
...Just in Time for Summer Reading!
Many of our schools and sites held NOVA RIF book distributions just in time for the summer. Summer reading never looked so good! Here are some of the faces filled with delight in anticipation of a summer of reading fun! To see more photos from NOVA RIF books distributions from the 2021-2022 academic year, please click here!

NOVA RIF special friend Tharren Clark -- shown with his most recent book donation -- has been purchasing and contributing books to children in our community for several years! Kenmore Middle School students got to choose some of those books during a spring distribution, organized by school librarian and NOVA RIF liaison Claire Prisock. Students were thrilled with their new books, and they said so in a big thank you note! Carlin Springs ES students got books from Tharren Clark, too, and were equally delighted!
The LEAD Office at George Mason University focuses on leadership development for GMU students. Leadership consultants D.J. Grant (l) and Elena Dajero wrote to NOVA RIF:

"We originally came up this book drive by researching local organizations, and we read the great features on your website and how the books directly help children in
the community. We felt this was a timely service project as families went through spring cleaning and found books that needed a new home!"
Olga Autote and Raider Ferreira collected over 300 gently used books for a NOVA RIF donation. Thanks to all our book donors! More book donor pics and an honor roll of can be found by clicking here.
