Military Veteran Suicide Prevention Study Identifies Gaps in Documenting Veterans’ Status Between Local and National Levels
Right now, nearly half of all veterans are unaffiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs or another veteran-serving organization.

Mission Roll Call  is the first-ever movement of its kind – one dedicated to giving every veteran a voice in advocating for the issues that are important to them.

To combat veteran suicide, organizations like national nonprofit America’s Warrior Partnership take a holistic approach, working with community organizations to address the challenges veterans face before they turn into deeper problems. Because circumstances surrounding veteran suicide are complex, the group develops and maintains relationships with veterans to help them balance all aspects of their lives, from education and employment to housing and transportation, among others.

Cheree Tham, co-founder and vice president of America’s Warrior Partnership, says common challenges veterans face include transitioning from the unified culture of the military to finding their own individual path in the civilian sector, which often starts with connecting the skills they learned in the military to the requirements of employers and academic institutes.

The annual Figawi Sailboat Regatta is an iconic tradition with more than 200 boats competing in a 25-mile race off the coast of Nantucket. Taking place over Memorial Day weekend, the race serves as the unofficial start of the summer season for New England. This year’s event saw several military veteran-crewed ships compete, and I was proud to participate with one of those teams on board a ship called “Defiance.”

The theme of this year’s Symposium will be “Empowered Veterans,” and there are few individuals who embody this ideal more than our keynote speakers: Scotty and Tiffany Smiley. Major (Retired) Scotty Smiley is an Iraq War Veteran and the first blind active-duty officer in Army history. After losing his sight in a confrontation with a suicide car bomber in 2005, Scotty continued to serve his country in the U.S. Army. Today, he and his wife, Tiffany, share their family’s story of overcoming adversity to inspire others to serve their communities.
