A Note From Dean Jermyn

Summer has flown by, and it’s exciting to see our campus energized once again as we welcome the Class of 2029 to Rowan-Virtua SOM. Our newest medical students recently completed a weeklong orientation, and we look forward to their White Coat Ceremony on August 8.

After a quieter start to summer, it’s wonderful to have students, faculty and staff back on campus, bringing renewed energy and enthusiasm as we begin another great academic year.

My best regards,

Richard T. Jermyn, D.O.

Dean

SOM Welcomes Class of 2029 at Orientation

Rowan-Virtua SOM’s new first-year medical students were officially welcomed to campus with a weeklong orientation program, July 14-18!

The 292 class members participated in a variety of activities, including educational programs, small group information sessions, fit testing, basic life support and CPR certification course, breakfast and lunch socials, and a welcome back BBQ. The activities were designed to not only give students a sense of the campus, community and expectations for a successful medical school experience, but to also provide opportunities to meet fellow students, faculty and staff.

The Class of 2029 includes a diverse group of students from across the state and the country.

Quick facts:

  • 52 percent female
  • 63 percent are from New Jersey, with 15 percent who call South Jersey home
  • Largest cohort of international students to date, with 18 students representing seven countries

In August, we look forward to celebrating the Class of 2029 and officially welcoming them into the osteopathic medical profession at their White Coat Ceremony.

Mister Softee Ice Cream Truck Visits SOM

Faculty and staff recently enjoyed a sweet break when the Mister Softee ice cream truck stopped by the Stratford campus on July 8. The event brought colleagues together to enjoy ice cream and conversation. Mister Softee will visit the Sewell campus next on August 12, offering another chance to cool off and connect with others.

Big Little Meetup

On July 21, the Big Little Meetup was hosted in Stratford. The event was filled with great conversation, valuable advice about navigating medical school and plenty of fun. Attendees enjoyed snacks and ice cream while playing yard games under sunny skies and perfect weather. It was a fantastic way to build community and kick off the year with positive energy!

Joanna Petrides, MBS, Psy.D. from the Departments of Family Medicine and Psychology and chair of the Rowan-Virtua SOM Wellness Committee, shares this month’s tip for improving wellbeing.

Most of us feel we should be able to do things on our own and we hesitate to ask for help. It’s important to remember that even if you can do things on your own, you don’t have to. It’s ok to ask for help and seek support outside of yourself if you feel stuck or are struggling. Asking for feedback or getting someone else’s perspective or abilities involved can help you accomplish the task more efficiently, make the task more enjoyable, and teach you to view situations from a different perspective.
