Guitar Workshop!

We are thrilled to announce a fun and educational addition to the Festival this August – on Saturday August 10 th from 1:00 – 3:00 pm , guitarist Mak Grgić will be leading a hands-on workshop! All guitarists, all styles, are invited to bring your instrument and join in. Mak will share general guitar techniques and inspirations that will work for anyone who enjoys playing around with 6 (or 12) strings.
Here is a bit more about Mak – www.makgrgic.com . Looks pretty inspiring to us!
The workshop will be in the Madrona Room at Orcas Center. There is no charge to attend, but you must register with Tracy at tracy@oicmf.org by August 9 th if you would like to join us. Bring your guitar and see you there!
Meet the Composers

There will be many harmonious musical moments throughout the Festival this August. There will also be harmonious speaking moments, with pre-concert talks before each concert, at Maestro Gerard Schwarz ’s Behind the Baton lecture ( August 5 th ), and during one very special morning…on Wednesday, August 14 th , from 10:00 am until noon , we will be hosting a most amazing convergence of creative minds.

Former longtime Canadian Broadcasting Corporation host Eric Friesen will anchor the discussion. For those of you who are not CBC listeners, here is a sample of his dulcet tones:

And we’ll have him here, live! In person! Talking creativity, process, who knows what, with two legendary modern composers.

Joining Mr. Friesen on stage will be this year’s OICMF Composer-in-Residence, Kevin Puts . Mr. Puts won the Pulitzer Prize in 2012 for his debut opera, Silent Night . He continues to be a shining star in the world of opera and other works, including Home , which shall receive its world premiere by the Miró Quartet during our World Premiere Finale concerts (August 15 th on Lopez, August 16 th and 17 th on Orcas).

As if listening to Mr. Friesen interview Mr. Puts was not enough, they will be joined by former OICMF Composer-in-Residence, world-famous composer for opera, vocal, orchestra, chamber music, and musical saw, and all around great guy Jake Heggie . As anyone who has heard Mr. Heggie talk in past years of the Festival, he tells a great tale, and combined with these other two, well, wow.

Tickets for this grand morning, and for Maestro Schwarz’s talk, are available at www.oicmf.org . (No tickets required for Pre-Concert Talks).

Recipe of the Month

Those who attended our Spring Thank You Concert were fortunate enough to see what amazing people and musicians violinist Charlotte Marckx and her sister, cellist Olivia Marckx are. The rest of you will get that pleasure during the Festival, at our An Evening with Susan Graham ( August 2 nd and 3 rd ) and Violin Variations ( August 6 th and 7 th ) concerts, as well as our Children’s Concert ( August 7 th ). What does it take to raise two such extraordinary musicians and human beings? We all know “you are what you eat”, so we asked their mom, Leslie, for a favorite family recipe. We expect that if you start eating this regularly, you and yours will grow up to be just like Charlotte and Olivia. Plus, it sounds delicious. Enjoy!
