Welcome to the Eagle's Nest
Congratulations to the Newest Class of Eagle Scouts
SCHOOL NIGHT FOR SCOUTING
This year’s theme for Cub Scout recruitment is “Scout Me In”. Not only will we have new flyers, yard signs and posters, we will also have new Pack and youth incentives for joining.

Some of the benefits your Pack should expect:
  • A well-planned and executed recruitment of new youth and parents
  • Accessible, immediate, and relevant training for new leaders
  •  A top-notch event for new families in October

“School Nights”
organized and run by district-wide volunteer teams at every elementary school, including:
  • A district volunteer Coordinator to run that night’s program
  • A uniformed volunteer Organizer who works with the participating pack(s) and assigns the youth to the packs and dens
  • Adult leader recruitment. Before we even accept the youth applications, we’ll ensure every Den has the necessary leadership

While the district leadership teams organize the School Nights, the Cub Scout Pack leadership naturally plays a vital role!

Cub Scout Pack’s Role in School Night:
  •  Assign a pack School Night Representative to communicate with the district School Night Team
  •  Coordinate with the district leadership which elementary school the pack will participate in at School Night
  •   Conduct a “Back to the Pack” summer meeting prior to School Night for all returning Cub Scouts
  • Communicate with the School Night leadership any unique needs/interests of the pack that School Night might help meet (Prior to School Night)
  • Participate in your district-wide School Night Kickoff (August)
  • Ensure pack leadership attends School Night to receive applications and greet new leaders and new Cub Scouts!

More information will be provided by your district School Night teams.

Council Coordinated Committee Meeting
Tuesday, August 20, 2019
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 20, 2019, at the Fred Maytag II Scout Center (6123 Scout Trail, Des Moines, IA 50321) for the next Council Coordinated Committee Meeting. This meeting is for all District operating committee chairs, Activities, Camping, Training, Commissioners, Advancement, and Program. If your District operating chair is unable to make it please send a representative in their place .
A service project is a special Good Turn that puts Scout spirit into action. Some Good Turns are big—saving a life, helping out after floods or other disasters, recycling community trash, working on conservation projects. But Good Turns are often small, thoughtful acts—helping a child cross a busy street, going to the store for an elderly neighbor, cutting back brush that is blocking a sign, doing something special for a brother or sister, or welcoming a new student to your school. Anyone can get involved in a Good Turn. If you would like to participate in a service project to benefit your community, contact your local Scouting office.
Alumni & Friends Association
Thank you to the Mid-Iowa Council Alumni Association for collecting funds to replace a washing machine at Camp Mitigwa, located just outside the Maytag Pool. It was desperately needed to make sure our Scouts stay "Clean" at camp.

What a great idea to support the camp through your association.

Mid-Iowa Council Scout Safety Corner – July 2019

New: The Protect Yourself Rules Preview Adventure for Cub Scouts
The Boy Scouts of America is committed to creating safe environments for Scouts and leaders. Child abuse is an uncomfortable topic but an important one for us to cover to ensure the safety and well-being of our Scouts. The Boy Scouts of America has partnered with subject-matter experts from the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Foundation to present the “Protect Yourself Rules” that help children recognize, respond to, and report abuse.

Before starting work on this adventure, the den leader should review Scouting’s Barriers to Abuse since the Protect Yourself Rules adventure is intended to complement our many existing youth-protection measures.

The Protect Yourself Rules Preview Adventures may be used as an elective adventure OR they may be earned in place of the Cyber Chip requirement for the Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, and Arrow of Light badges of rank.

Submitting Eagle Scout Rank Applications

A simple step has been added to the process of preparing for Eagle Scout boards of review in our council. A completed Eagle application form must be submitted for confirmation of earned merit badges and other details by the council before a board of review may be held. When this step has been completed ... for more information
Membership Card printing process
The BSA is committed to streamlining basic operations by putting tools in the hands of volunteers. For several years, individuals and unit key 3's have had access to print membership cards through my.Scouting. In addition, functionality was added to my.Scouting on January 1, 2019, to enable members of the unit key 3 to print their unit Charter Certificate.
This “self-service” functionality allows volunteers to print membership cards and the unit charter certificate in a timely manner and enhances the on-boarding experience for new youth and adults.
