Tips for beating the heat

Summer heat is upon us. While it's important for all of us to stay cool, it's especially vital for older adults.

Stay hydrated - drink lots of water! If your home is too hot, find an air-conditioned location, if possible, like a shopping mall, movie theater, or library. Dress appropriately.

Here are some additional tips for staying cool:  https://www.care.com/c/stories/5444/12-summer-safety-tips-for-seniors/.

If you know an older adult who  needs a fan and can't afford one, Senior Resources may be able to provide one. Contact Jim Peterman at 231-733-3570, or [email protected].

Don't forget to register to vote!
Voting is an important right. Laws relating to suffrage (the right to vote) date back to the constitution, and numerous constitutional amendments have given more people the right to vote.

With primaries  and the general election this year, the deadline to register to vote is quickly approaching - July 9 is the deadline for the August primary, and October 9 is the deadline for the November general election.

For more information on registering or obtaining an absentee ballot in Michigan,  Visit the Secretary of State office website for more information.

Need to borrow a wheelchair? Medical Loan Closet fills a need

Maybe you, or someone you know, needs a walker or wheelchair for a short time. Did you know that Senior Resources offers a Medical Loan Closet?

Our Medical Loan Closet (located in Tanglewood Park, 560 Seminole Road, Norton Shores)  offers a variety of items for use by older adults in our 3-county area of Muskegon, Oceana and Ottawa counties.

We happily accept donated items in good condition, and frequently have need for the following items: adult incontinent briefs, wipes, bath benches, shower chairs, tub transfer benches, grab reachers, over-the-bed hospital tables, and grab bars in 18-inch and 24-inch sizes.

To learn more about what we accept (and don't), visit https://seniorresourceswmi.org/medical-loan-closet/.  Most items are donated, and we cannot guarantee availability of any item.

For more information, contact Jim Peterman at 231-733-3570, or email him at [email protected].
