Breaking Ground, Building Connection: The Greenway
The September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance is excited to see local leaders, state officials, and community partners celebrating the recent groundbreaking of the Greenway on July 15 in northern New Jersey. This long-anticipated milestone reflects years of vision, planning, and collaboration to transform a former rail corridor into a vibrant, multi-use path that will connect communities with open space, mobility, and purpose.
The Alliance recognizes the tremendous efforts of organizations, advocates, and public agencies who have brought this project to life. Their leadership and commitment to reimagining this corridor as a space for both recreation and community deserve deep appreciation.
As this new section begins to take shape, the Greenway will play a pivotal role in the future of the 9/11 National Memorial Trail. Once complete, it will serve as a key segment linking the Trail through northeastern New Jersey to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City. It will enhance accessibility for cyclists, runners, and walkers, while providing a reflective route that supports the Trail’s broader mission of honoring those lost and affected by the events of September 11, 2001.
The Alliance looks forward to integrating the Greenway into the 1,500-mile memorial corridor and advancing the Trail’s vision of a continuous path of tribute—from the Pentagon to Shanksville to Ground Zero.
