Where's Waldo Scavenger Hunt
Saturday, July 1 through Saturday, July 29, All Open Hours
Yes, it's back again! During the whole month of July Bookends & Beginnings will sponsor the annual Downtown Evanston Where's Waldo scavenger hunta great summer vacation activity for kids and a wonderful way to discover (and support) local businesses. Throughout the month, the famous stripey-shirted character won't just be hiding out in books, the way he usually does. He'll be hiding out in nearly three dozen fabulous independent businesses downtown and on Central Street. Kids pick up their "Find Waldo in Downtown/North Evanston!" passport at Bookends & Beginnings and get their passport stamped or signed at each store for each Waldo they spot. Finding Waldo at 20 or more businesses gets kids into the final party on Saturday, July 29, where they can pick one of the prizes donated by all the participating businesses.

lonely line breaks: ChatRQT came about when Robbie Q. Telfer asked ChatGPT about his poetry, and it replied with entirely made up poem titles and synopses that Robbie Q. Telfer had not written. Telfer wants to defend ChatGPT’s integrity, so he has written some of the poems that it has said he has already written. Now ChatGPT is no longer a liar, but a prognosticator. This collection is proof that poetry is really very easy to write and all you need is a helpful robot to get you started. Welcome to the future of art!
Robbie Q. Telfer has performed and taught in hundreds of places in nine different countries. His work appears in places like SEISMA, Connecticut River Review, cream city review, Sinking City Review, The New Territory, and many others. He's been an individual finalist at the National Poetry Slam and has a poetry collection from Write Bloody Publishing. He currently works for The Morton Arboretum and Friends of Illinois Nature Preserves trying to protect and celebrate what's left of our wild spaces.
An In-Store Spectacular at Bookends & Beginnings
Wednesday, August 16, 2023 @ 6:00 PM
Please join us in the downstairs event space for a drink from the Minibar and 30 minutes of magic, humor, and storytelling! Greg Whalen is a full-time professional entertainer who lives right here in Evanston. He has an M.F.A. in Acting from the University of Illinois, and he studied with the Royal Shakespeare Company in London. His work as a voice actor can be heard on The History Channel, Disney Channel and countless other places! Mr. Whalen’s magic show—although it is designed for grown-ups, not children—is PG-rated, light-hearted, engaging and full of whimsy.
The fourth volume in the immensely popular Field Guide series, The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Graphic Literature gives readers unprecedented insight into the techniques of 28 of today’s most innovative creators of poetry comics, graphic narratives, and image-text hybrids. From mark-making and page composition to deeper renderings of place, character, and voice, this much-needed guide to the field illuminates and demystifies the process of creating image+text work. Editors Kelcey Ervick and Tom Hart also provide a historical introduction that links today’s graphic literature to visual storytelling of the past and helpful pedagogical resources to round out the volume.
Co-editor Kelcey Ervick and contributors Naoko Fujimoto, Scott Roberts, Marnie Galloway, and Lauren Haldeman will join us in our downstairs event space to launch The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Graphic Literature.
