July Is Smart Irrigation Month. Are Your Customers' Systems Ready?

Water is money. And right now, your customers are either saving it or wasting it.

July is Smart Irrigation Month which is the perfect time to help your clients upgrade outdated controllers, fix inefficient zones, and install the technology that pays for itself in one season. Weather-based smart controllers alone can reduce outdoor water use by up to 50%. That's a conversation every homeowner and property manager wants to have when summer water bills hit.

Here's what to do this month:

  • Audit first. A quick system check-up can uncover leaks, misfiring heads, and scheduling problems that are quietly costing your customers.
  • Upgrade controllers. ET-based and smart controllers are easy upsells with proven ROI.
  • Talk efficiency. Contractors who lead with water savings win more bids.

Stop by your local Aqua-Flo Supply branch this month, we're stocked up on the smart irrigation products you need and ready to help you close more jobs. Work smarter. Water smarter.

Will They Improve or Quit?

Walking the Line Between Confrontation & Coaching

Many leaders struggle with holding people accountable. They’re afraid to be too tough in enforcing deadlines or rules, and worry about rebellion or job quitting among the troops. As a result, leaders fail to address gaps and problems continue.

Accountability is not negative or restraining. Most employees want to do a great job and be recognized for their contributions. Managers should feel empowered to manage.

Set Clear Expectations Often lack of accountability or follow-through comes from lack of clear expectations or direction. Team members are guessing or assuming, not knowing. You need to clearly communicate expectations and be sure the worker clearly understands. (ask: how do you interpret what needs to be done?)

Set Check-Ins Decide when and how you’ll track progress. Be available for suggestions and advice, not to help do the work. Keep communications open, and provide feedback as work happens so any challenges can be addressed early. The manager’s job is to make sure the materials, resources and instructions to achieve the goal. Recognize good progress.

Coaching vs. Confrontation You must do a mix of both. Proactively confront and correct poor performance as early as possible, on a one-on-one basis. Communicate the consequences of continued poor performance. Coach by understanding the gap: is it lack of knowledge? Lack of motivation? Misunderstanding? Lack of trust? Does the worker understand the assignment and what they agreed to do and didn’t complete? Commit to stay with the situation until it improves, reminding them of their commitment to perform.

How to Attract and Keep the Best Technicians Out There

Contractors are scrambling for more technicians. There are a lot of older irrigation systems out there that now require more frequent service. How can you attract and retain the best?

  • Company culture - At any job, people want to feel appreciated. In a service-related job, this desire goes up. Often, techs play "second fiddle" to installation crews and don’t get the recognition they deserve.
  • Incentive pay - Give technicians a "piece of the action" on selling upgrades and annual service plans.
  • Tear down barriers - Improve communication between office and the field. Install proper service software. Give them better tools. Listen to their input.
  • Reward skill building - Invest in technicians skills, both diagnostic skills and human skills.

Keeping great technicians starts with showing them they matter. A strong culture, fair incentives, better tools, and ongoing training can go a long way in helping contractors build a team that stays, grows, and represents the business well.

How to Refresh Your Quote Package to Close More Sales

Most contractors lose jobs after the walk-through, not because of price, but because the quote doesn’t build confidence.

A quote is often the last thing a customer reviews before deciding. That makes it a marketing asset, not paperwork.

Here’s what matters now:

1. Lead with clarity, not line items - Open with a short summary: scope, outcome, and timeline. Customers want to know what they’re buying before they study how you priced it.

2. Show proof, not promises - Add one or two photos of similar projects. Include a short testimonial. This reassures buyers they’re choosing a contractor who’s done this before.

3. Explain why, not just what - Brief notes on materials, methods, or design choices reduce price objections. When customers understand the reasoning, they compare less on dollars alone.

4. Make next steps obvious - Spell out how to approve, when work can start, and what happens next. Fewer decisions mean faster decisions.

If your quote helps a homeowner feel informed and confident, you’ll win more work, even when you’re not the lowest price.

Artificial Turf Maintenance Tips

Be sure your customers follow the right cleaning and maintenance routines to care for their artificial turf. Here are some guidelines you can share:

Regular Cleaning

  • Remove debris: Regularly remove leaves, twigs, and other debris using a leaf blower, rake, or a stiff brush. This prevents organic matter from decomposing and causing damage to the turf.
  • Brushing: Periodically brush the artificial turf fibers with a stiff brush to restore their upright position and enhance the turf’s appearance.

Addressing Stains and Spills

  • Blotting spills: Immediately blot any spills on the turf using a clean cloth or paper towel to prevent staining. Rinse the area with water if necessary.
  • Removing stains: For stubborn stains, use a mild detergent mixed with water. Gently scrub the stained area with a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly.

Pet Waste Management

  • Solid waste: Promptly remove solid pet waste from the turf using a plastic bag or scoop. Dispose of it properly in a trash receptacle.
  • Urine: Rinse the affected area with water to dilute and remove urine odors. Consider using an artificial turf cleaner or pet-specific odor neutralizer if necessary.
