Succeeding in Reentry – Facing the Barriers
Consider standing on a sidewalk, recently released from incarceration, having no photo ID, no Social Security Card, no bank account, and possibly owing back child support and restitution---and don’t forget facing how to get necessary medications! Those are only a few of the barriers an ex-offender faces. A hotel requires a photo ID to check in, to get a photo ID you need a birth certificate. To get a job you need a Social Security Card, but to get one you need your birth certificate and a photo ID. These are only some of the obvious barriers a person faces upon his / her release from custody. How can these barriers be overcome? By planning and preparing prior to release, and embedding yourself in a network of support providers who are willing to help you while incarcerated and immediately upon your release. This is where Serving USA Partners enter the picture.
Inside of facilities across the nation we support prison reentry programming through multiple organizations, such as Lifeline Global, who are there specifically to assist in reentry planning. Serving USA also funds The Urban Ministry Institute which prepares men and women spiritually for a successful life through proper moral decision making. Further assistance may be sought through Root and Rebound, who assists with legal issues such as child support and obtaining necessary documents. A successful reentry begins inside the prison walls, but often times requires outside assistance. That is why Serving USA proudly supports each of our partners across the nation and their efforts to assist incarcerated individuals.
