Updates from the Furniture Masters
Furniture Masters & Student Summer Mentorship Underway

Members of the Furniture Masters have partnered with a group of BFA students from the Institute of Art and Design at New England College (formerly New Hampshire Institute of Art) to complete a summer mentorship.

Students have been visiting the Masters’ workshops and learning about fine furniture making. The students are taking what they have seen and learned from the Masters to reflect, draw, design and create a response piece in their medium. These response pieces will be on display at our New Works Exhibition at the Institute's French Gallery, 148 Concord Street, Manchester, NH from August 22 - October 3. There will be a free public Opening Reception on September 5 from 5 - 7pm.

A People’s Choice Award will be awarded to one student participating in this exhibition. We invite you to fill out a ballot casting a vote for your favorite response piece when you visit the New Works Exhibition. See updates from the mentorship below. Furniture Masters Tom McLaughlin and Owain Harris just got back from the AWFS Fair (Association of Woodworking and Furnishings Suppliers) in Las Vegas. Owain and Tom were 2 of the 3 speakers representing Fine Woodworking magazine's Live presentations.

Tom's presentation, "Ten Ways to Distinguish and Add Value to Your Work" focused on how various approaches to design, including added details and small embellishments, can have wide applications and can significantly distinguish and enhance work. Tom's presentation included many examples derived from his twenty-year membership with the Furniture Masters. You can see his entire presentation here .
During Owain's presentation for Fine Woodworking, "Integrating CNC Technology into the Small Furniture Shop," he discussed his journey from techno-phobe to reluctant CNC owner and eventual enthusiast.

Owain also gave a presentation with John Conrad, titled "How Did We Get Here? A Conversation On Business, Career, And Creating A Life In Furniture" where they discussed success, failure, and learning from both in the world of Design and Woodworking. You can see more about this presentation here .
