Happy July!

This month we celebrate Independence Day -- why not use this as an opportunity to declare your own independence from the things that sabotage your well-being?

Is anxiety or depression preventing you from enjoying time with family?  Do you frequently rely on sleep aids or pain medications?  Are attention problems affecting your work life? Do the products you use or foods you eat contain toxins that can impact your health?  Whether you are struggling with these or other less-than-healthy habits, our team of specialists can support your needs and put you on the road to wellness.

As we head full steam into summer, we want to remind you to opt for healthy choices for the products you use to protect your family.  Don't let sunburn or bug bites ruin your outdoor summer fun -- we have some great naturally healthy product recommendations that will provide effective protection, while supporting your health. (Check out Dr. Chiappino's video below for more information.)

Our office will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th as we celebrate the holiday with our loved ones.  We wish you and your family a safe and happy Independence Day!

Yours in health,

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Brent Reynolds

Tips for Naturally Healthy Outdoor Living Protection

Essential oils are a popular choice for a wide variety of personal care uses throughout the year. They are particularly beneficial during the summer months, helping to beat the heat when temperatures soar, as well as providing natural, non-toxic protection from the sun's harmful rays.

Did you know that in certain areas of the country and the world, sunscreens are banned due to the harm they are inflicting on coral reefs and marine life? If these popular store brand products are destroying our aquatic environments, what harm are they doing to our bodies? Plant and mineral-based sunscreen products offer a healthier choice.

Check out my video for some healthy summer living tips on safe UV protection lotion and DEET-free insect repellent that wards off pesky bugs naturally.   For more information, contact the office, or visit my micro site https://oily.life/drkerichiappino .
Medication Overuse Can Spawn New Headaches

Migraine sufferers beware - medicine taken to alleviate symptoms may actually be increasing their severity.   A new study published in The Journal of Headache and Pain found that patients who overuse medications like triptans, opioids and barbiturates for migraine often exacerbate their condition, resulting in more days and greater severity of monthly pain, as well as greater severity of other migraine symptoms.

A multidisciplinary approach using non-drug therapies like chiropractic, neurofeedback, acupuncture and massage can be effective in reducing pain, without triggering rebound headaches. In fact, in a study of 71 patients undergoing treatment for migraine, more than half of those who opted for neurofeedback therapy experienced complete cessation of their migraines, with 34% experiencing a reduction in frequency.   A holistic therapy plan, combined with a healthy lifestyle of proper sleep, diet, hydration, aromatherapy and exercise such as yoga, can go a long way to helping to alleviate symptoms.

If your migraine treatment regime is not providing the relief you need, give our office a call to learn about non-drug therapies that can help improve your health. This month, our acupuncturist Lori Fortunato, LAc, is offering $25 off initial acupuncture appointments for migraine and headache (private pay clients).

New Mid Life Woes: High Blood Pressure Linked to Dementia

High blood pressure has been known for years to be a trigger for cardiovascular disease, stroke and kidney damage. New research now points to hypertension at middle age as a risk factor for A lzheimer's Disease and dementia.

In a recent study, participants with a systolic blood pressure of 130 or more at age 50 were found to be 45 percent more likely  to be diagnosed with dementia in their 70s and 80s than people with lower blood pressure at the same age. Interestingly, the results did not indicate any correlation between hypertension and dementia at advanced ages of 60 or 70 years old.

In a separate study also just published, Italian researchers us ing advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology for the first time were able to detect early signs of neurological damage from hypertension. Researchers were able to pinpoint deterioration in white matter fibers connecting areas of the brain that are involved in attention, emotions and memory in patients diagnosed with high blood pressure.

Study results are significant and can help play a role in possibly preventing cognitive decline, as the brain begins to change 10 to 20 years before dementia symptoms show. Making lifestyle changes, like following the DASH diet, exercising and maintaining an ideal weight can lower blood pressure levels and help prevent vascular damage that impact parts of the brain responsible for thinking and memory.
