Hypnotic Herps: Ecology of the Reptiles and Amphibians of the Sonoran Desert

This series will explore the amazing world of reptiles and amphibians right in our back yard. In this episode, we describe the differences between reptiles and amphibians, why Southwestern AZ is home to such a large diversity of herps, and some of the current threats that they face. In future episodes, you can look forward to learning about endangered and invasive reptiles and amphibians, adaptations to desert living, and the variety of toxins and venoms that these wonderful animals can produce.

The Magical, Mysterious World of Moths

In honor of the 11th annual National Moth Week, we celebrate the incredible diversity of moths. Some entomologists think there may over 500,000 moth species worldwide! Moths can be remarkably colorful or incredibly cryptic, pinhead to dinner plate in size. They are important pollinators and a food source for birds, bats, and lizards. Best of all, moths are just about everywhere! Join us for a look at these remarkable, but underappreciated, insects.

Hypnotic Herps: Ecology of the Reptiles and Amphibians of the Sonoran Desert

This series will explore the amazing world of reptiles and amphibians right in our back yard. In this episode, we explore the various endangered reptiles and amphibians of the Sonoran Desert, what threats they face, and the current research aimed at population recovery. We talk about the various non-native species that exist in southwestern AZ, like bullfrogs, sliders, and Mediterranean geckos, their threats to native ecosystems, and the work being done to help these populations decrease.

Hypnotic Herps: Ecology of the Reptiles and Amphibians of the Sonoran Desert 
Wednesday, August 24, 2022 @ 6:00 p.m. MST

This series will explore the amazing world of reptiles and amphibians right in our back yard. In this episode, we learn how local reptiles and amphibians succeed in the desert. We answer questions like: What adaptations help them survive in the desert? Where do the frogs and toads go in the winter? How do snakes and lizards get water during the dry season? We also highlight the variety of toxins and venoms that these wonderful animals can produce for defense in harsh environments like deserts.
