In celebration of all the joy and discovery that summer brings, we're reading great books about travel and adventure. Check them out at the library: | | |

Weird Wisconsin by Linda S. Godfrey
Recommended by KAYLA, who notes this book "highlights the 'weird' sides of what our wonderful state has to offer, including art, museums, and even local legends such as our very own cryptids" and that "any Wisconsinite that picks up this book will be joyed by factoids they are familiar with, and enthralled by the new ones they find!"

His Name Was Death by Rafael Bernal
Recommended by BEN, who describes this as a book "about a hermit that leaves civilization to live by himself in a Mesoamerican rainforest, settling as a neighbor to a local indigenous tribe. While living there, he teaches himself how to communicate with Mosquitoes and has the bizarre realization that they are actually the overlords of every living thing on Earth. They bond over their shared hatred of humanity and plot to enslave the human race...It's a story that considers the twisting philosophies of "the intellectual upper class" and foils them with the realities of nature. All told, it's a brilliant, ridiculous, and violent classic."

Grandma Gatewood's Walk
by Ben Montgomery
Recommended by KATE, who notes this book "is the true story of the first person to do a through-hike of the entire Appalachian Trail. She wasn't an athlete or a celebrity, she was a 67 year old great grandmother who needed a break after a rough life of hard work. This woman went for a walk in the woods, and in so doing proved the trail was and should continue to be accessible for average Americans, likely saving it in the process. This nonfiction book is a great summer read for anyone planning to travel! It will remind you that a lot can be done with a very little."

Mamo
by Sas Milledge
Recommended by ABBY, who describes this book as "an internal adventure and mystery involving a young traveling witch who finds herself in the town she grew up in. The town is suffering from a magical curse and as she begins to deal with this curse, she learns more about herself and the town that she left behind. The artwork is beautiful and it's a moving story about the connection between people and places."

Last Chance to See
by Douglas Adams
"By the author of the famed Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, this autobiographical travel journal tells the tale of a project that Adams did for the BBC, where he traveled around the globe with naturalist Mark Carwardine to visit the native habitats of 9 of the most critically endangered species on the planet, from the kakapo in New Zealand to the komodo dragon. Along the way, Adams tells the story of each of these remarkable species and the conservation efforts that are being made to save them with a healthy dose of his trademark humor."
