FROM THE VIRTUAL ENGAGEMENT LIBRARIAN

Last November, I shared some information in this newsletter about current trends in magazine and newspaper publishing and the impact of those trends on our periodicals collection here at the library. Unfortunately, the trend of print periodicals reducing publication frequency or ceasing print publication altogether continues. As publishers shift to prioritize digital content, they contract with vendors who work with libraries to provide access to their content. As vendor contracts with publishers change, the availability of digital magazines and newspapers from the library often changes too. This is why you may notice some digital magazines disappearing from library apps like Libby, Hoopla, or PressReader.

The library will continue to provide a diverse selection of print and digital periodicals, but it is likely that many titles will continue to reduce their frequency, cease print publication, or alter their digital availability in the coming months and years.

Many of your favorite magazines and newspapers remain available digitally from the library on LibbyHoopla, or PressReader. Ask a librarian to help you get started with digital magazines next time you visit!

WHAT WE'RE READING

A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross

Secrets abound in this immersive novel set on the enchanted Isle of Cadence, a land divided by rival clans and teeming with fickle spirits. Returning from a decade of exile, Jack Tamerlaine must work together with his childhood rival Adaira to discover why the clan's young girls keep disappearing. They suspect the spirits are involved, and only a bard like Jack can summon them. The first of Ross's Elements of Cadence duology, this moody fantasy with a touch of mystery is a wonderfully escapist summer read.

I highly recommend the audiobook versions of this Scotland-inspired fantasy series available on hoopla!

Black Holes: The Key to Understanding the Universe by Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw

If you're interested in black holes but intimidated by the math that explains them, this book is for you! Black Holes: The Key to Understanding the Universe is an accessible and mind-blowing read that will change the way you understand the universe and your own existence. Everything that has ever happened and will ever happen exists already as a location in spacetime.

Because time does not exist inside a black hole, the image of everything that has been pulled into one remains seemingly frozen in time just before it. Read this book if you want to understand how all of this is possible!

Scurry by Mac Smith

I came across Mac Smith's graphic novel Scurry in my monthly Milwaukee County Federated Library System book recommendations email. (You can sign up HERE if you’re interested.) I checked it out because I wanted to get a mouse's perspective on cats. Little did I know, I would get completely wrapped up in an adventure! Besides cats, Scurry features wolves, possums, crows, beavers, and even a moose trying to make ends meet in a post-apocalyptic world without humans. Scurry is a children's graphic novel, but it doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of life like hunger, sabotage, and survival; it does include illustrations of death as well.
